Michael Jackson to get 3-D tribute

Jan 20, 2010, 16:32 GMT

Michael Jackson is to perform from beyond the grave in a 3-D tribute at the Grammy Awards.

Some of the world's biggest stars - including Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, Smokey Robinson and Usher - will take to the stage next Sunday (31.01.10) to sing alongside a high-tech video of the late King of Pop's 'Earth Song', a segment which was going to be an integral part of his 'This Is It' London residency.

Ken Ehrlich, Grammy co-executive producer and friend of Michael's, said: "It was one of the most important portions of the concert tour to Michael, and when Michael saw the film for the first time at his last rehearsal, there were tears in his eyes."

The assembled star performers will now sing along with a recording of Michael's vocals and the never-before-seen video, and sets of 3-D glasses are to be distributed across America so TV viewers can enjoy the visuals fully.

Michael - who passed away last June aged 50 - had viewed the 3-D clip with Ken shortly before his death.

The footage aims to highlight how wild animals are being destroyed by humans and was Michael's favourite part of his whole planned concert set for his never-seen 50-night residency at The 02 Arena.

Ken explained: "There are these incredible images of the beauties of nature, and then they are seen through the eyes of a little girl. That girl falls asleep and when she wakes up she is witness to the destruction of nature. It's all about questioning what our values are.

"It was pretty emotional for him. Afterwards he said to me the song and that piece was as important to him as anything else in the show."

At the ceremony, Michael is to be honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to music.

Beyonce Knowles, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Green Day, Pink, Bon Jovi and the Black Eyed Peas are also set to perform at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards.
