Hugh Grant's unhappy New Year

Hugh Grant has made it his New Year's resolution not to smile.

The British actor - who stars in new movie 'Did You Hear About The Morgans?' alongside Sarah Jessica Parker - is so worried about gaining weight, he has pledged not to alter his facial expression in 2010 in case it highlights his expanding figure.

The 'Bridget Jones Diary' star is quoted by the Daily Express newspaper as saying: "I've resolved never to smile. That's because someone told me it makes me look fat."

The 49-year-old actor - who has had a string of beautiful girlfriends including Elizabeth Hurley and Jemima Khan - has recently spoken about how he is also feeling miserable about turning 50 next year.

He said: "I should settle down. It's all my fault, I've had some lovely girlfriends. I don't know how to cope with it".

Hugh also has less reason to grin following dismal reviews for his latest film 'Did You Hear About The Morgans?'.

American critics have been so savage about the comedy - about a couple in the witness protection scheme - the reviews would wipe a smile off anyone's face.

The Los Angeles Times described Hugh as never being "less charming" and USA Today said: "Hugh grimaces and winces but none of it will draw even a tepid laugh. He has more chemistry with the grizzly bear in the movie than with co-star Sarah Jessica Parker."
