Vienna - Hollywood star Nicolas Cage has been named Goodwill Ambassador by the UN Office on Drugs and Crimes, as an actor who has often explored the dark sides of human nature on screen, the Vienna- based UNODC announced Friday.
'The Lord of War has become a messenger for peace, the Bad Lieutenant has turned into a good cop, and the inmate from Con Air has become a champion of prison reform,' UNODC chief Antonio Maria Costa said, referring to films in which Cage has starred.
The UN organization focuses on drug control and on helping countries set up effective judicial and police systems.
'I intend to shine the spotlight on the need for global justice, publicize all the good work that UNODC is doing, and highlight how we can all make a difference,' the new Goodwill Ambassador for Global Justice said in a statement issued by the UN body.
The 45-year-old actor has been championing human rights issues for the non-governmental group Amnesty International.
