Rapper Lil Wayne pleads guilty to weapons charge

New York - Rapper Lil Wayne pleaded guilty Thursday to a weapons charge and will serve a one year jail sentence, prosecutors in New York said. The charge of attempted criminal possession of a weapon stemmed from a July 2007 incident in which a gun was found on his tour bus following a New York concert. DNA evidence reportedly tied him to the weapon. The plea allowed the rapper, whose real name is Dwayne Carter, to avoid more serious weapons charges that could have meant a jail sentence of 15 years had he been found guilty. Carter, 27, won three 2009 Grammy awards for Tha Carter III, which was the biggest-selling US release of the year in 2008. Despite settling the New York case, the rapper faces a trial for drug and weapons possession in Arizona after marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy and a handgun were allegedly found in his tour bus there.
