Instead, he broke the appendage in a more prosaic fashion - by slamming the car door on his wrist, his representative, Stan Rosenfeld, told People magazine Thursday.
The accident happened at Clooney's villa near Lake Como, Italy, and Clooney, 49, was treated at the private Ars Medica clinic in Gravesano, Switzerland, about a 40-minute drive away.
'The doctor has given him 30-40 years more to live, and no live animals were harmed during the wrapping of the hand,' Rosenfield joked. 'The only reason he went to the hospital was to get a temporary cast put on.'

Heche trashes ex-husband
Los Angeles (dpa) Actress Anne Heche has trashed her ex-husband on national television, accusing him of being a 'lazy-ass'.
Heche was married to former cameraman Coley Laffoon from 2001 until March, and he has custody of their 7-year-old son, Homer.
Calling Laffoon 'lazy ass,' Heche derided what he does for a living: 'He goes out to the mailbox, and he opens up the little mailbox door and goes, 'Oh! I got a check from Anne! Yea!''
Laffoon, now a real-estate agent, responded to the pillorying via statements to Us magazine and on his Facebook page.
To Us, he said: 'After coming home from showing two different clients at two different condominiums, I was disturbed to see Anne taking out her personal frustration on the father of her child on national television.'
Neeson becomes US citizen
New York (dpa) - Irish actor Liam Neeson has become a US citizen, saying he was inspired by the outpouring of good will he received in America after the death of his wife, Natasha Richardson, who died in March following a skiing accident in Quebec, Canada.
'I've been living here for 20 years, and America's been very, very good to me. I'm still a proud Irishman, of course, but I've become an American citizen. I'm very, very proud of that,' he told ABC television interviewer Diane Sawyer.
The 57-year-old says he received a steady, extraordinary and continuing stream of condolence letters from Americans.
'That is partly the reason why I've recently become an American citizen,' Neeson said.
