Frontman Tyler, 61, born Steven Tallarico, was airlifted to a hospital after falling off the stage at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in western South Dakota.
Tyler was performing "Love In an Elevator," said Mike Sanborn, spokesman for the Buffalo Chip Campground, to the AP.
It was the narrow stage catwalk that tripped up Tyler, who reportedly fell backward onto some fans in the large crowd.
Reports from the show were that Tyler was hurt with head, back and neck injuries but in "good spirits" as he was taken to a nearby hospital.
"He was good natured about it," Sanborn said. "He was in good spirits when he got in the helicopter. He was talking and joking with the physician."
"It was an unfortunate end to an extraordinary evening."
The "Bad Boys from Boston" have been touring and rocking since the early seventies, starting out playing in local Boston suburb high schools, then area clubs before their hit song "Dream On" and album "Toys in the Attic" made them international stars. Tyler was originally from Yonkers, New York but met up and connected with Perry and Tom Hamilton, Massachusetts natives, to create the band.
Tyler has always been a kinetic performer on stage, wildly dancing and in constant motion.
"He does a lot of dancing on the stage and he does a lot of stuff with his mike stand. He put his stand down and twirled around and stepped backwards off the stage," Sanborn said to the AP.
