Obama celebrates first birthday in White House (Roundup)

Washington - US President Barack Obama turned 48 on Tuesday and was to spend part of his birthday meeting with the 58 Democrats in the Senate to push his health care plan. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Obama would discuss health care and the economy during the meeting. Some Democrats have balked at his extensive plan for reforming health care. Obama celebrated over the weekend at the presidential retreat Camp David by bowling and playing basketball with friends, Gibbs said. The 44th president surprised reporters by showing up the daily press briefing with a plate filled with cupcakes with birthday candles stuck into them. But the cakes were not for him. He brought them out to share them with Helen Thomas, who turned 89 on Tuesday and is the longest serving member of the White House press corps.
