Washington - US President Barack Obama on Friday presided over the graduation of the US Naval Academy's latest class. Among the graduates was former rival John McCain's son.
Obama told the class of more than 1,000 graduates in Annapolis, Maryland that he only sends them into battle when it is 'absolutely necessary' and the goals and strategy of the mission are clear.
'This is the promise I make to you,' Obama said. 'It's a promise that as long as I am your Commander-in-Chief, I will only send you into harm's way when it is absolutely necessary.'
McCain, the Arizona senator defeated by Obama in the presidential election, also attended the ceremony for the graduation of son Jack.
