Ahh. Then this explains why Abrams essentially remade A New Hope using the classic Star Trek crew
Abrams' Trek does a great job of adapting the characters and production design for our contemporary times. But I wish he would have payed a bit more attention to the 'science' part of science fiction.
It is Star Trek's essential grounding in our reality as a vision of our potential future that has traditionally separated it from space based fantasy like Star Wars. And it is this grounding, and the series' metaphorical treatment of contemporary issues, that has traditionally given the franchise its staying power.
I'm all for watchable, fun, popular Star Trek. But there's no reason it can't be all of those things while maintaining at least the illusion of science based credibility. Unfortunately this film fell a bit short on that front. Here's hoping the sequel makes a better effort but stays just as entertaining.
the director itself is not a fan, no wonder the newest movie is not like any other star trek series.. i haven't see it, but hopefully the change does not turn out to be a major disappointment to trekies...
