Tom Cruise is to remake 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'.
The 'Valkyrie' actor started plans to produce the 60s western - which is about two lovable bank robbers - last year and hopes to star in the with his close friend John Travolta.
The 46-year-old star even got the blessing of Paul Newman - who originally played the role of Cassidy - before he died from lung cancer last September and is currently in talks with scriptwriters.
A source said: "It has been a pet project of his that has been on the back-burner for years. But now he's ready to go, and will most likely happily eschew the enormous salary that he normally commands."
When the movie goes ahead Tom will revive the role of Sundance - previously played by Robert Redford - and John, 55, is expected to play Cassidy.
Close friends of the Hollywood star say he is thrilled to finally make a start on the project.
A friend told Britain's Daily Mirror: "Butch and Sundance is a labour of love for Tom. He was eight years old when he saw the original and it made an impression that has stayed with him all his life. He can't wait to get to work."
Tom plans to produce the remake through United Artists, a studio he co-owns.

I think it would be a great fit having those two in those roles, but they have big shoes to fill; the original movie was a gem! Tom usually makes sure everything in his movies are top notch so I am sure it will be great as well.
Perhaps John's wife Kelly Preston could play his love interest....she still looks great, even well in to her 40's!
A big question in all this is: Should Merrill Lynch and Bank of America be engaged in Hollywood movie making after receiving taxpayer money in the form of the TARP?
If Merrill Lynch's half-billion dollar contract with MGM/UA/Tom Cruise cannot be broken--like the AIG bonuses--then shouldn't movie executive compensation be set to no more than $250,000 per year? And, if such movie executives make more than that, they should be taxed at the 90% tax rate that the House of Representatives passed concerning people getting the AIG bonuses.
This movie financing with taxpayer money should be a matter of taxpayer and congressional outrage! It is putting government money at too much risk; especially after the 'Valkyrie' and 'Lions to Lambs' failures.
Let your congressman and senators know how you feel.

so let me get this right > Tom said about Valkyrie that he grew up wanting to kill Hitler > Tom said about Days of Thunder that he grew up wanting to drive fast cars > Tom says about this movie that he grew up wanting to make this movie
