His recent efforts have been lauded by critics and audiences alike, but despite his Best Actor Oscar nomination for David Cronenberg's brilliant film, "Eastern Promises". the Danish-American actor born in New York and who grew up in Argentina until he was 11, told the UK Times Online he is contemplating not working on film.
“In the past week I’ve been from LA to Japan to Korea to Poland to here,” he tells Kevin Maher of the Times Online, describing his busy junket. “It’s ridiculous! It’s not a healthy way to be. But, as it happens, I’m taking measures to change that.”
He elaborated his feelings. “No more movies. I haven’t said yes to one in over a year. I’ve been in all these well-received movies and it seems like I should be doing some more, but there’s other things I want to do. It’s not the right time.”
Maher pressed him for an answer as to when he would accept a role. “I really don’t know,” replied Mortensen.
Mortensen discusses the lucrative roles he was offered after the blockbuster hit "Lord of the Rings."
“I was offered some of them after Lord of the Rings,” he says. But they were often “complete crap, all about product placement and marketing”.
“I don’t need the money,” he tells the Times Online. “I only want enough money to live and to travel, to send my kid to school and to contribute to society.”
Maher asked if Viggo would consider doing a comedy. “I don’t get offered many,” he says. “Because it’s something I haven’t showed that I can do yet.”
