The US singer revealed she had lessons in the contact sport when she was a teenager.
Katy said: "I'm not a violent person, though I did take boxing lessons from the age of 17. My coach was a Jamaican street fighter, and he once lost an eye in a fight. It gives him character.
"I cannot skip to save my life, but that's what I do to keep in shape."
Despite Katy's skills in the boxing ring, she insists she wouldn't resort to violence unless someone threatened her loved ones.
She added: "But I would never fight anyone, unless they wanted to hurt my family."
Katy isn't the only celebrity who boxes to keep in shape.
Christina Aguilera revealed she toned up her figure after giving birth to son Max Liron last year by sparring.
She said: "I'm doing some boxing and weights - I want to be totally back in shape."
Matt Damon took up boxing in a bid to lose weight after piling on the pounds for his movie 'The Informant'.
He said: "If you put it on, it's easier to get it back off. I'm just boxing. I figure if you get hit enough times, it will fall off!"
