The soccer star - who is currently on loan to Italian soccer team AC Milan from Los Angeles Galaxy - and his wife Victoria have reportedly decided he should sign for the Italian team full time as he has performed so well for the club.
However, the former Spice Girl will stay in Los Angeles with the couple's sons Brooklyn, nine, Romeo, six, and Cruz, three.
A source said: "It was a painful decision for Victoria and there were a lot of tears. She was really worried about leaving David behind in Italy."
Victoria, 34, will move her fashion design studio from London to Milan so she can work on her dVb range when with David.
She was initially not keen on the idea of relocating as she didn't want to uproot the family again.
The star was also said to be concerned if David, 33 - who was accused of cheating on Victoria with his personal assistant Rebecca Loos while he was playing for Real Madrid in 2004, an allegation he has always vehemently denied - moved alone he might be bombarded with offers from beautiful Italian women.
The source added: "It brought back terrible memories of Madrid and all the stories about women and nightclubs. But what she likes about Milan is that it is a very family-friendly team. After the matches, it is very Italian and players are out with their wives and children."
David has been particularly keen to make the move as he is determined to play for England in the 2010 World Cup. England manager Fabio Capello has recommended he transfer to AC Milan if he wants to make the side.
The source added to Britain's Sunday Mirror newspaper: "Victoria realised she was fighting a losing battle - David is playing extremely well with Milan and she can see he has got his spark back.
"He knows if he is going to make the England World Cup 2010 team he has got to start playing top-flight football again."
