Phelps could claim that the drug has no performance-enhancing effects... not to pile on but that's bs.

Anyone that smokes pot and works out knows that pot eases muscle pain the day after a hard workout with heavy weights.

Just saying.

I should add that I'm retired, in my early 50's, without kids so who cares what I do.

I would never smoke if I had kids in the home... now that's a sin.

Fwiw, vaporizing is the way to go... smoking ruins the lungs.

I don't see what the big deal is. The only reason this media smear works is because pot is illegal in the US. It's modern day's 'prohibition.' Truth is EVERYBODY smokes pot, it's just that Phelps got caught. Pot smoker or not, I STILL think he's hot. (Wow! I'm a poet and I don't even know it!) I'm not going to think any less of him just because he does or did something most honest Americans couldn't admit to because of the law. It should be LEGALIZED. Why is it alcohol, which causes car accidents, is legal, but pot is not? Back in the days of Prohibition, beer would have gotten any American in trouble. I'm not buying it. Phelps is a GOOD guy. I don't care if he smokes pot.

Its no big deal Michael..Just remember, when you are famous you cant do what everybody else does. They will villify you, just to have something to talk about. The bong ting does not take away from your accomplishments and your admirable determination to exceed.

Oh my goodness. Can't you people just admit that he did something wrong and move on with it? Are you people trying to say that Phelps should be an advocate of drugs? Drugs, alcohol and cigarettes are all bad. The only reason why I think cigarettes and alcohol are allowed is because they are available almost everywhere and not as addictive as drugs. Anyway, I'm sure Phelps can still win medals at the next Olympics regardless of whether he smokes pot or not.

Actually the media is being quite gentle with him. Perchance it has to do with his religion? Yes.

To Joe in California and all the rest of you who don't think that smoking weed is any big deal, you couldn't be more wrong. First of all, Joe, no, not everybody smokes pot. I'm a child of the 50's, grew up in the 60's and 70's and never used any illegal drug. My friends haven't and don't either. My brother, who has and does use marijuana has had a nightmarish life with drugs of all sorts, but it all began with with cigarettes and pot. He's approaching 50 now and perhaps finally for the first time in his life, overcoming paranoia and severe depression and perhaps getting his life together after recently ceasing its use. Marijuana, alcohol or any illegal drug use WILL have a negative effect on the body and negatively influences judgment and physical abilities, both short term and long. And for those of you who rebut me and tell me I'm wrong, you're only fooling yourselves. Michael Phelps ought to be ashamed of himself and I do hope he suffers professionally and financially for his stupidity. For those of you who deify athletes and politicians, you get what you get. Kudos to Michael for his magnificient Olympic accomplishments, but he's no god, and his accomplishments won't save him. He had a golden opportunity to be a positive role model for young people and now he has just thrown it all away. What will be the ramifications of his actions now? Nobody knows for sure. I just feel it is a very sad situation and it is a big deal. And Joe, tell me that you'll be the first to hop on that airplane, or bus, or go into surgery after the pilot, driver and surgeon have had a few tokes? You'd willing to entrust your life to someone who's high? What Michael has done and your reaction that it's no big deal is symptiomatic of the problems this nation faces. We've turned our backs on God the Father and completely lost our way and are no longer collectively capable of sound judgment. It is a lost nation who proclaims there is no God and that everyone should just do as he/she pleases and is blind to the consequences. The fact is is that there are always consequences. So, yes Joe and all the rest of you, this is a big deal, and just look at what has happened to our once great nation. Part of the reason we're struggling like we are is because at any given time, a sizeable portion of our population is in some state of altered consciousness. Wake up people and see what you're doing to yourselves and to your nation! You're dying and so is our country when our so-called heroes live their lives in this fashion and then we feel no shame. All Americans should be hanging their heads about this and Michael Phelps needs to repent and ask Jesus Christ to save him. May God help us all and Joe, may you and everyone else who agrees with you search your souls and find the real meaning of life and realize that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the light and I pray your lives might be transformed into the people that God originally created you to be. Don't be deceived for God is not mocked. Unless you repent, your sin will find you out. And yah, I know a lot of you will write me off as a religious zealot and that's you're right, but truth is still truth and one day you shall indeed know the truth because every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. We're all mortal and our lives are short and everyone must give an accounting; I will have to, Michael Phelps will and yes, Joe, even you will too. So before you light that next joint, inhale from the bong or stick a needle in your arm, think about it and realize that God did not create you to be an addict. And realize you only have one life that's a gift from God and that you have no right to squander this gift. Think about it people.

Michael,

I know plenty of people who take illegal drugs and still understand correct paragraph and sentance structure, so they cant be all bad.

Too bad he showed his lack of maturity in doing this. He might just have blown some big bucks in endorsements as this, coupled with his drunk driving charge at 17, doesn't bode well for being a role model. You can't have it both ways. However the pot smokers out there feel about weed not being anything serious - it's still illegal, and this guy has been protrayed as a pretty straight guy. It doesn't mean he can't still compete and win, but endorsements? - maybe not.

For the people that think weed is addictive, it is NOT. THC is not addictive. Weed is many times safer than alcohol. It's not legal only because the government has no way of controlling it like alcohol and tobacco. They can't tax it and make money because you can grow it and smoke it with no processing.

Harmless.

Marijuana should be legalized. This prohibition is one of the most backward laws on the books. It's a misnomer to call it an 'illegal drug'. It's a natural herb with a mild, short term, euphoric effect. It's too bad Michael Phelps is apologizing instead of taking a stand on what he obviously believes.

How do you know he really believes in it? He was probably half drunk at a party and this was the results. I'm also getting tired of articles calling him a 'boy'!! My god, at 23 you aren't considered a boy. The majority of our military would be considered 'boys' then.

Its ridiculous that this is such a big issue. He didnt hurt anyone. Yet when he got caught drinking and driving under age, it was ok and brushed off. He could have killed someone then. This is all b/c of prohibition. Its pathetic that he apologized and I bet he still smokes. SO WHAT.What if it was not a 'mistake' as some are putting it? Many successful and collegiate individuals smoke cannabis. The information that the govt, tobacco, and pharmaceutical industries want you to think is all propaganda. For those of you who speak negatively about cannabis. Please speak the reasons that aren't supported from the resources above. KNOW THE TRUE FACTS! Don't degrade a topic which you know little or are misinformed about.

Cannabis does not make people 'lazy' or any other of the labels that the govt. wants you to think. It is the individuals itself that decides that. If you are a lazy individual then you are going to be lazy regardless especially if ANY substance is introduced into your body. Not ONE person has EVER overdosed from cannabis. Also, did you know that those anti-weed/drug commercials are paid for by the tobacco and pharma companies? If cannabis becomes legal, they will loose so much money. Another tidbit for those of you that dont believe that cannabis has medicinal capabilities (besides the numerous tests that were funded by govt and organizations to prove otherwise); the U.S. bought a patent on cannabis and its antibody qualities in 2003. Hmmm i wonder why?

The FDA will not approve cannabis as a medicine (besides money from corp.) b/c of the lack of testing done. Well, while Bush was president he shut down testing. So how is it possible to learn about other medicinal properties that cannabis can offer to patients? Go figure. Thats our govt for you, its all about lobbying, scare tactics and money!

As a European and world citizen it really worries me how certain American media and people in the US can put so much emphasis and one-sided strong views on small issues such as soft drugs - sex etc. and on the other hand feel perfectly fine with invading countries based on misleading information.

This incident with Michael, the nipple incident with Janet Jackson it's all a lot of fuzz over nothing. Soft drugs and sex is not such a bad thing providing they don't lead to the exploitation or mistreating people (and no, it doesn't allways automatically lead to that for those who excell in linear thinking). Legalising and promoting arms and violence are things you should worry about. Yet this seems to be some non-negotiable issue. Very strang indeed. I would think make love not war!

Wake up guys and look at the real issues in the whole world! Other countries have different experiences and approaches and you might be able to learn from these if you are only willing to open your eyes and look beyond the usual horizon.

I think its quite inspiring. I have a bit of a bong often before a swim and it seems to help me swim more like a dolphin. I truely believe the world would be a much better place if more people had a bong instead of fighting. I think it puts people on a higher level of existance. I also program computers after a bong pretty well. I have researched that it helps relax the synaptic passages, amongst many other beneficial health properties. It also is used by spiritual men in many parts of this world. It is a spiritual and health giving substance. Maybe that is why these corrupt countries want to ban it. Is it more profitable to keep people sick and unevolved, believing in blind faith and violence, rather than in the true groove of life!
