The 59-year-old actress was approached by Alec Baldwin about appearing in the hit US TV show after she won the Best Actress Screen Actors Guild award for her role in 'Doubt' on Sunday (25.01.09).
Alec - who won the Best Actor in a Comedy Series award for '30 Rock' - interrupted Meryl's celebrations to ask her to shoot a guest role.
A source said: "Meryl was delighted with the idea of appearing on the show - she said yes immediately."
The popular US show has become a fashionable programme for Hollywood's elite to work on.
Previous guest stars have included Jennifer Anniston, David Schwimmer and Matthew Broderick.
Meryl didn't expect to win at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and arrived wearing black trousers.
Accepting her accolade, she said: "I didn't even buy a dress. I'm really, really shocked.
"There is no such thing as the best actress. There is no such thing as the greatest living actress. I am in a position where I have secret information that I know this to be true. I am so in awe of the work of the women this year - nominated, not nominated - so proud of us girls. Everybody wins when we get parts like this."
