There goes an icon of an era, an artist and a fine actor, a very hard headed man of deep convictions, and he will be missed.
He was also the guardian, maybe the sole defender of The Prisoner legacy, and I'm afraid some of those cheap schlock operators who are always schlepping in the background will now pounce on the concept and rape it for a quick buck.
It's the way of the world. Everything worthwhile that is not heavily defended can and will be dragged down to sewer level by the lowest denominator. I'm not talking about some silly parody of the Mona Lisa with an Alfred E. Newman grin. That's kinda funny and inoffensive.
I'm saying that the whole concept of The Prisoner could be discovered and enjoyed anew by the young generation in a new movie or miniseries with its meaning intact, if it was made by intelligent and responsible craftsmen and artists.
But if the bottom feeders get a hold of it, not only will the kids miss out on a great and meaningful piece of sociopolitical fiction, but it will also make them wonder if we were off our rocker to elevate The Prisoner to cult status.
And THAT, my friends, would be a tragic loss.
