Heath - who died of an accidental overdose in January - was posthumously named Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of The Joker in summer Batman blockbuster 'The Dark Knight'.
Sean won Best Actor for his role as gay politician Harvey Milk in thriller 'Milk', while the association named 'Wall-E' Best Picture - the first time in its 33-year history an animated film has won the top prize.
British star Sally Hawkins was given the Best Actress prize for her role in 'Happy Go Lucky'.
Best Director went to another Brit, Danny Boyle, for his film 'Slumdog Millionaire'.
Penelope Cruz picked up the Best Supporting Actress award for her roles in 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona' and 'Elegy'.
The awards ceremony is seen as a keen predictor of films set for glory at next year's Oscars.
Other movies to pick up awards included, 'Still Life', 'Man On Wire', 'Waltz With Bashir' and 'Hunger'.
