The 75-year-old British actor, who was honored for his five decades of film success, praised the event's organizers for their charity work after accepting the prestigious accolade, which he dedicated to his wife Lady Shakira.
He said: "I've been working with Variety for around 30 years. I've been on many occasions to places where children were being interviewed and found it sometimes so harrowing I couldn't continue.
"There are some extraordinary people helping these little mites".
'Righteous Kill' star Al Pacino won the International Award, while Scottish actor James McAvoy was presented with the Film Award for his performances in 'Atonement', 'The Last King of Scotland' and 'Wanted' at the glitzy London ceremony held at the exclusive Grosvenor House hotel.
The event - hosted by comedian Jon Culshaw - also saw UK TV presenter Noel Edmonds scoop the Showbusiness Personality gong, while actor Kenneth Branagh was handed the prize for best Stage Performance.
Variety Chairman John Sachs said: "The Variety Club Showbiz Awards are the oldest and most established awards in the UK that recognise the outstanding talent in the field of entertainment.
"Due to the generous donations of our guests and supporters, the vital funds raised will enable Variety Club to continue to support children and young people."
The ceremony will be broadcast on British satellite TV channel Sky1 on November 30.
