The news that presidential hopeful Barack Obama has an Kenyan aunt living illegally in the Southie section of Boston has raised questions that if her nephew was an influential Senator, why could she not be helped with the legal process to become a legitimate citizen?
The Associated Press has found that the woman, Zeituni Onyango, 56, living in public housing in Boston, is in the United States illegally after an immigration judge rejected her request for asylum four years ago.
"Aunti Zeituni" was noted in Obama's memoir was instructed to leave the United States by a U.S. immigration judge who denied her asylum request, a person familiar with the matter told the AP.
The AP noted that Onyango's refusal to leave the U.S. "would represent an administrative, non-criminal violation of U.S. immigration law, meaning such cases are handled outside the criminal court system."
A spokeswoman for U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, Kelly Nantel, told the AP that the "government does not comment on an individual's citizenship status or immigration case."
Onyango's immigration status revelation was confirmed by the Times of London earlier in the week.
The AP reaised the question that it was uncertain how Onyango even qualified for public housing with a standing deportation order.
Now a statement issued by the Obama campaign said, "Senator Obama has no knowledge of her status but obviously believes that any and all appropriate laws be followed."
The AP reports that the Obama campaign "was returning $260 that Onyango had contributed in small increments to Obama's presidential bid over several months."Federal election law prohibits foreigners from making political donations.
Onyango claimed her employer was the Boston Housing Authority and last gave $5.

This is his idea of redistribution of wealth; he cannot or will not even help his own relative in need. But this brings me to my next point the fact of her status in the United States and her contributions to his campaign. I think this may be against the law and he is a lawyer isn’t he?

Umm, he has no choice other than returning the contribution. This proves nothing about his temperament.
this would be just as salient if McCain had an illegal Irish immigrant in Southie-a huge problem (illegal Irish) by the way in the Bay state. The big question is- if you or I were related to a US Senator, and trying to immigrate to the US-wouldn't you think that they could help grease the wheels for the paperwork or juice the process? Doesn't make any sense.

In her senior thesis at Princeton, Michele Obama, the wife of Barack Obama
stated that America was a nation founded on 'crime and hatred'.
Moreover, she stated that whites in America were 'ineradicably racist'. The
1985 thesis, titled 'Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community' was
written under her maiden name, Michelle LaVaughn Robinson.
Michelle Obama stated in her thesis that to 'Whites at Princeton , it often
seems as if, to them, she will always be Black first...' However, it was reported
by a fellow black classmate, 'If those 'Whites at Princeton ' really saw Michelle
as one who always would 'be Black first,' it seems that she gave them that
impression'.
Most alarming is Michele Obama's use of the terms 'separationist' and
'integrationist' when describing the views of black people.
Mrs. Obama clearly identifies herself with a 'separationist' view of race.
'By actually working with the Black lower class or within their communities as
a result of their ideologies, a separationist may better understand the desperation
of their situation and feel more hopeless about a resolution as opposed to an
integrationist who is ignorant to their plight.'
Obama writes that the path she chose by attending Princeton would likely lead to
her 'further integration and/or assimilation into a white cultural and social structure
that will only allow me to remain on the periphery of society; never becoming a full
participant.'
Michele Obama clearly has a chip on her shoulder.
Not only does she see separate black and white societies in America , but
she elevates black over white in her world.
She's the half aunt of his father, whom he met once. I find it difficult that he should be responsible for or expected to know where she is all the time, or her legal status.
As a social worker, let me just say that just because she's living in public housing doesn't mean it's in her name or that she herself qualified for it.
Many people on public assistance or in situations like hers refuse help from others, including family members. (Such is the case with his relative in Kenya.)
Personally, this strikes me as a non-story -- unless you're planning to dredge up goods on every single extended family members of McCain, Palin and Biden.

Well, maybe it's a PLUS for Obama that he DIDN'T 'grease the wheels' for a family member. So he's a senator and he didn't help out his family member with any special favors. That sounds like a GOOD thing to me, why spin it as BAD?

Seattle Girl...if this seals the deal for you, then your fact gathering skills used to come to a presidential election decision are shallower than the West Virginian gene pool.
barack obama who seems to want to help all americans and people by taking money from people in the form of taxes and deciding who he thinks are fit to be helped. look at his life. what has he done personally to help anyone nothing. no charity. his aunt is living in the slums. and for him to say he did not knopw about it is so absurd. he mentioned her on this memoirs. she attended his senat inaugural in 2004. if you are sensible you will see the pattern. he did not 'really' know his pastor, his friends, etc. think before you hand the keys to this country to this guy.
OK, if we're going to bring up Obama's relatives and how you think he behaves toward people, let's not forget that McCain, by his own admission, had multiple affairs while still married to his disabled first wife, Cindy being one of them, and they were married a month after his divorce. What does that tell you about his character? He's hell bent on doing what he darn well pleases regardless of who stands in the way. He's got a reputation in congress as having a terrible temper and not treating people well. Not someone I want leading this country.
This is so horribly going to backfire on the Republicans - we've seen it happen before - they more they try to besmirch Obama's name by tenuous association, the stronger he emerges, and the more determined his supporters and voters become.
They will teach the GOP the lesson of a lifetime.

All this business about Obama’s aunt is sad. I have compassion for the old gal. She is now suffering humiliation and the blistering light of our mainstream media. This is wrongful.
Yes, she should have worked on becoming a legal immigrant, but this is difficult. She probably could have become an American citizen had she worked hard at this. I do not know much about our immigration laws, doubtful many of you readers know much about this topic. Correct my thinking on this if I am wrong. I invite this.
My understanding is this old gal could become a citizen if she has a sponsor. This is, if an American or an American family document they will take her in, take care of her and take all those steps needed to find her employment, income, a place to live, all that, under circumstances like this, I “think” she could become an American citizen.
I do not know for sure. Again, I am very ignorant of immigration laws. Maybe a reader can clarify and add to this issue.
There is a cultural perspective worthy of mention. Our traditional peoples, we American Indians, are well known for taking in others in need, those of our bloodline. Not all of us do, but a majority of us do. This is especially true up in the Lakotas where our peoples are the most impoverished peoples of our nation. Not uncommon at all for ten, twenty or more people to be living under one roof. Sioux, Cheyenne, Crow, other tribes in the Lakota region, are well known for taking in those in need, no matter how distant the blood relationship.
This prompts me to wonder why Obama has not offered to take in his aunt, has not offered to sponsor her or employ some other method of helping her earn citizenship. I am sure there is something Obama can do, some law, some loophole, something he can do to help her.
Why has Obama not taken steps to help his aunt? He has certainly enjoyed plenty of time. Heck, years back he could have secretly whisked her away, made arrangements for her care. I tend to think not many would criticize Obama for an act of compassion, especially with her being old and at a disadvantage in our country. I do not know, maybe he would be critiqued. Personally, I would not fault Obama for helping his aunt in need; I would turn a blind eye.
Suppose this a cultural difference. Our peoples, if a distant relative, would have taken her in, right off. Not only taken her in, we would have also hidden her from authorities.
I suppose Obama is not willing to take a risk in the name of family compassion. Appears Obama is calling for his aunt to be deported back to Kenya. Odds are high, she will die back in Kenya.
I suppose her life is not as important as the presidency, to Obama.

Me Auntie is illegal and living off the good people's tax dollars in public housing? Oh, who cares? What is a border or national sovereignty anyway but a silly little line and a rule to be broken? Our only choices are a scowling old man or an inexperienced eloquent who just now likes America and Americans since they see his way to vote him in to the Presidency. America is reminding me of the fall of the roman empire and no Pbama nor McCain can stop it, not even if you get another credit card or a tax credit.
Yes both parties suck, they are mostly full of hacks, and drones that serve the total politician. Statesmen are gone from the USA. Meet the new Clintonian candidate all things to all people. I'm a blackman to black people, but I am half white? I want unity, even though I surround myself with radicals and racists (can blacks be racist, ask Michelle). One party rule just like Carter, or Robert Mugabee in Zimbabwei. Obama the all things to all people, promise more, use their fear (the economy). All this with a couple of years experience in the US. But all the foreign powers would love to see him elected. This insures a US decline from power, so we can be no problem to others. Watch your pocket, the Federal Obama will give you more money, but the states will suck that up as they to are in deficit collapsing because of spending all the grab from the taxpayer. Keep dreaming.
McCain, insider, unable to come up with a plan. Can't claim to be black. But he is a veteran. Knows if you promise too much because of experience that it can't happen. So can't promise too much, or would be hopped on, so plays it cautious. Well pretty much toast.
So there you have it two usless candidates. Carved from the two parties.
The future:
1) Financial hardship for the country, probably for quite sometime.
2) Continued trouble in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran
will be a nuclear power. Then will work to gain intercontinental ballistic missles technology. Probably another five or so years, oil buys friends.
3) China continues to erode American jobs, while buying more US treasury notes to keep the US in line. US cow tows to China. More to come.
4) Illegals get more rights as the US business can hire them cheaper, as they give less to the system, it erodes.
5) US and Mexico tie on educational standings in the world for education. Right now we are just above Mexico. US number 17 for best educated in the world right now.
6) Lastly the US becomes more Third World in its ways. crime, poverty, radicals, or more Stalinist in its reprisals against its people in order to maintain order.
7) Or in regard to #6 starts a new war to unite the people against the common enemy, to be chosen later.
8) The debt will be so staggering for the country, it will either, collapse, or start nationalizing to prop up the finacial system, print more paper money!
So that leaves me voting for Ron Paul. At least I will have the satisfaction of trying to save the system from itself. Perhaps not, but my conscience will be clear. Even as the rest of the dominos tumble.
I find it hard to believe that Obama's aunt did not contact him asking for advise and/or help regarding her immigration status. If I was facing deportation and Obama was my nephew, I certainly would have contacted him. I wonder if she had any legal representation at her deportation hearing. I can not imagine the aunt of a Senator appearing at a deportation hearing without legal representation. If she had legal representation then I would like to know who it was and if they have any connections to Obama.
As usuual, Obama is commanding us to dismiss this because 'he was unaware.'
For those of you who blindly follow Obama because the Media says you should and because Oprah shouted 'He is the one!', all I can say is 'wake up!'

I thought stories about family members were 'off-limits?'
It's a non-issue and shows more as a negative for the Republicans for Obama. They have someone who is willing to 'leak' immigration information (against the law), they don't have enough oversight over public housing to stop people with deportation issues from enrolling, and they are so desperate this is all they could come up with as a 'zinger!'
