The 45-year-old singer was terrified when he took to the stage to perform as he thought people might hate his voice.
He said: "Music was my escape. I remember being petrified the first time I sang. I closed my eyes, sang, and everyone clapped afterwards. That gave me such a buzz that my fears melted away. From then on, I kept coming back."
Seal has also revealed he now takes inspiration from his family - wife Heidi Klum, their sons Henry, three and 23-month-old Johan as well as Heidi's daughter Leni, four, with Formula One mogul Flavio Briatore - when writing music.
The singer says 35-year-old supermodel Heidi is his "best friend", adding he fell in love with her so quickly he didn't mind when she told him she was pregnant by her ex-boyfriend one month into their relationship.
He told Britain's Daily Mail newspaper: "I was taken aback when I met her. I thought she was one of the most beautiful women I'd seen. I thought, 'Wow! Whoever goes out with that girl is one lucky guy!'
"A month into our relationship, she told me she was pregnant, but was no longer with the father. I told her it didn't change the way I felt about her.
"Apart from being my wife, she's also my best friend."
