MASTERCHARGE (McCAIN)
(Mastercharge, Albert Collins)
WilliamBanzai7

I got my Veep running mate a platnum card
Just the other day
I owe $150,000 dollars
Just for yesterday

I said, 'Sarah, here's a present
Go out and shop around,
Buy you a couple a-dresses,
Browse around downtown'

She did just what I told her
Bought one, two, three and more
Came home lookin' silly
Makin' goo-goo eyes at me

Mastercharge, I'll break an' bury her card
Mastercharge, I'll break an' bury her card
Mastercharge, I'll break an' bury her card

Oh yeah, charge it!

Said, 'Did you get your dress?'
'Yes, one or two'
I needed me some shoes,
I needed some bags and jewelry, too'

Two thousand dollar dresses
I could-a made, I can't sew
It made me so mad
I could call her a so and so

Mastercharge, I'll break an' bury her card
Mastercharge, break an' bury her card
Mastercharge, break an' bury her card

Oh yeah, charge it for me, charge it, baby!

Hey! Ow!

For one-a that gal's dresses, yeah
I paid more than one week's campaign gas
I'm so mad, I just had to laugh

I could see in my mind
On a horse like Paul Revere
Hate to check my mail boxes
'Cause these bills keep comin' here

Mastercharge, break an' bury her card
Mastercharge, break an' bury her card
Mastercharge, break an' bury her card

Oh, let's charge it!

I think this is a gross misuse of funds. I can't say that I will ever donate to the public funds again rather I will direct my money to candidates that have integrity. Buying babies clothing with political contributions is completely inappropriate.

Let's not forget that McCain decided not to use public funds for the primaries.

The idea is that no scrutiny of other politicians is needed because they don't spend that kind of cash. It's improper no matter who does it, but a lot of politicians already HAVE the wardrobe to run a campaign.

Caribou Barbie comes only with a parka and snow boots. The accessories to turn her into Capitol Hill Barbie cost a lot more than the doll, herself.

The John McCain campaign has agreed to use tax monies (public campaign financing) to pay for Palin's $150,000 wardrobe.

The Obama campaign decided not to use public funding for his campaign and instead rely on contributions from his base (private donations from every day citizens).

Neither of them is obligated to use the public campaign financing system to fund their campaigns.

'..in a campaign that abides by the public funding laws, while the dems walked away, this is the response. Whats next....counting paper clips?'

Seems like everyone is abiding by public campaign financing laws... I'm not sure what 'while the dems walked away, this is the response' is supposed to mean, maybe you can elaborate?

We do need to know how typical this sort of behavior is, and especially if the democrat campaign is behaving similarly, but these comments are beside the point. The question is whether or not spending donation money on clothes is ethical, and it seems to me that it clearly is not. Donation money should be spent on running the campaign, not making your wardrobe better. I doubt Palin didn't have any nice clothes before this campaign started. If Obama is doing the same thing, then we should criticize him too. In any case, this sort of news is not especially relevant in the big picture. I am not not voting for McCain and Palin because of this spending non-sense; there are plenty of good reasons not to vote for them.

Hey SP4,
Obama 'abided' by campaign financing laws completely. The law is that there is a pool of public money available to both candidates. If a candidate chooses to use that pool of money (84 million dollars this time) then that candidate is not allowed to raise other funds. Obama chose NOT to use the public money because that allowed him to raise money on his own. It was obviously the right decision and not a surprising one considering that McCain can't even use a computer nevermind raise money on the internet!

If the middle class is the majority, then we should have direct say in how our money is spent with the best I repeat the best intrest of the majority and our country. Defenders of the Palin, please note it is not sexist to point out that she spent $150,000 on clothes for her and her family. Its not the cost that matters the most, it is where the $$ came from. Campaign coffers are not for the personal gain of the candidate. Of course she plans to give them to charity (?) or perhaps she meant to auction them off for charity would be more feasible, but when your caught breaking the rules you have to make a quick excuse up (lie).

I understand that running for president requires one to look the part and all, but 150k of the RNC's money is absolutely out of the question. She wouldn't dress herself this ostentatiously, and frankly, buying a 300 dollar stroller for her daughter's indiscretion is an even more repugnant use of donated money. Why isn't her DAUGHTER being taught a valuable lesson about motherhood? Namely, that it costs, and it doesn't go away.

Back to the point though. I do acknowledge that a candidate needs to dress respectably. If this had come out, at being close to even 15,000 dollars, though I might have raised an eyebrow, I do know that looking good doesn't come cheap. But in these times of hardship (and all other times) a candidate needs to exercise frugality. A week or two's worth of nice suits, ties, shoes, and a few pairs of cufflinks could be had at the men's warehouse for a sum WELL under 150k. And the MILLIONS of women across the nation get a nice wardrobe for well under 150k at Macy's (even with a stroller) This is nothing more than a sign of how the woman thinks. And any man foolish enough to pick a running mate from a google search that he's met once or twice in real life, has no business running the country.

What's even scarier is the precarious position of being one heart attack away from 'president Palin'. 'Oh what? that bailout money? Oh I spend that down at the pottery barn!'

Sara has always been such a lovely person, who lives modestly and simply. For McCain and the Republicans to invite her to join them for their national campaign, it is all together reasonable that if she needs appropriate attire, that they cover her cost of upgrading her wardrobe to match the job. Its the same way that anyone else in the public would want to be treated. I suppose everyone on the national scene, undergoing the kind of scrutiny that Sara has undergone, should be supported with teams that make them look their best. I mean, how do you expect the poor woman to be able to always look fresh for the cameras when she travels as much as the schedule demands? Have you travelled much? Its very tiring. I think she is a star performer, and we should be excited at the prospect of having someone as genuine as she is co-running our country. I believe the expediture on the wardrobe speaks volumes about how the McCain office would run America - It will be more of the same of the last 8 years - help the rick get richer - not fix the real probelms of America and the heart of it's existence - just keep feeding big business, oil companies and our Asian counter parts! If Palin requires that much polish, the question that begs an answer, is she the right candidate? Let's face it, the only reason he picked her was to combat the diveristy of Barrack's campaign. It is my opinion that if McCain / Palin were truly about change and not a continuation of the past 8 years, the manner they would conduct themselves would reflect their affairs during the campaign. Again, history is a great indicator for futre events and especially how a person will conduct their affairs. Furthermore, how many designer suites could a male running mate buy for $150K? The McCain / Palin platform is selling a an 'image' and presenting their VP nominee on 'oh isn't she so cute and fiery and what the little renegade she is'. The presetation does nothing for anyone looking for some substance in the VP position. The final question that begs to be asked is: God forbid that anything would ever happen to our President, but which person is better suited to run the greatest nation on earth - a little known governor of Alaska - or a tried and true veteran of Cap. Hill?

Obama's not using tax monies to pay for his campaign, but instead private donations. The limo, airfare, hotels, food, (and cigarettes? Yes,
This story is a pointless distraction. There are way more important concerns about this potential VP than the clothes the campaign puts her in. No doubt the male candidates are spending quite a bit on their costumes for the show, too. Not as much to be sure- but that is a classic social disparity about how much it costs for a man to make himself acceptable in appearance compared to a woman. Different expectations are at play here. It is pathetic but true that these superficial things still matter. Sure it's quite a contrast between the image Palin is meant to portray and the reality of having to stage this show for a campaign. Both Presidential candidates are well off and still try to sell themselves as one of the common folk.
But I don't feel there is any significant difference between expensive clothes for a candidate and expensive stage sets for rallies or huge travel bills to jet a candidate between appearances in multiple battleground states all in a single day. All of that is also about image, not about substance.
Also, read carefully, kids. It's not taxpayer money- The RNC payed out for the clothes with money they raised- not the public finance money that the McCain campaign has to use.

This wouldn't have gone over well in good economic times (like with Edwards's $400 haircuts) - $150K in one month is a lot to spend on Barbie clothes.

This is another example of Republicans over spending, the rich get richer, the poor look on with deer in the headlight eyes, when will this stop? its time for Americia to wake up! we need another boston tea party like uprising. with our economy slumpping thay are all flying around in private jets, buying expensive things, eating at 5-star resturants. I am stting here trying to find money to fix my van so I can go to work 14 hours a day, I need to see a dentist. can't afford it. You know anyone can dress nice and spend less, my GOD what would any of us normal folks do with 150.000 of free money? I would do a hell of alot more than spend 250 on a baby toys. think about it? that money would bail allot of people out from loosing homes etc. It MAKES ME SICK, what we have sat back and allowed our politicians to do to our country. People, are you forgetting these people work for US this is our Counrty! IT'S TIME TO GET INVOLVED, SPEAK UP, GET OUT AND VOTE, Become what our Forfathers fought so hard to give us all. John McCain in Pennsylvania = southern Pennsylvania is the most patriotic and God-loving part of America

Ok, John McCain, and the rest of America is what?? Unpatriotic nd God-hating??

Sarah Palin in Virginia = I love these small towns, they are PRO America!

Ok, Sarah Palin, and the rest of America is Anti-American, Un-American??

Michele Bautmann = Obsolutely, I feel he (Senato Obama) is Anti-American; I want the media to vet members of congress to find out wo is Anti-American

Representative Haynes = what did he say?? Whatever it was, was along the same lines. If someone remembers his exact words, please refresh our memories. :)

So these republicans believe the greater part of citizens in America are ANTI-AMERICAN, UN-AMERICAN, ARE NOT PATRIOTIC AND DO NOT LOVE OUR COUNTRY?? The very reason we are voting for Obama-Biden IS because WE LOVE OUR COUNTRY, WE ARE AMERICANS, AND WE LOVE OUR COUNTRY, AND WE ARE PATRIOTIC, AND WE WANT UNITY, WE WANT A PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT WHO BELIEVE IN ALL AMERICANS! The republicans are dividing our beloved country and they are DETERMINING who is PRO-AMERICAN, UN-AMERICAN, ANTI-AMERICAN, PRO-AMERI AN, PATRIOTIC, UNPATRIOTIC, WHO LOVES THIS COUNTRY, WHO DOES NOT LOVE THIS COUNTRY. Do these republicans EXEMPLIFY GOOD LEADERS??? I encourage the majority of Americans to vote for the leaders WHO REPRESENT ALL PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES: Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

John McCain and Sarah Pilan ONLY WANT TO REPRESENT THOSE WHOM THEY DEEM AS PRO-AMERICAN, PATRIOTIC, AND WHOM THEY FEEL LOVE THEIR COUNTRY. They keep throwng the rest of us under the bus!!

As for the RNC spending $150,000.00 for clothing for Sarah, her husband, and their children, I find this totally outrageous!! How do their supporters feel about this? Clothing for Sarah, her husband and their children being bought by their supporters!! Since when have the donors and taxpayers started paying for strictly personal expenses??? This is definitely a classic case of WELFARE for the Palins!! Looks like the Palins MILK the government for their personal needs. What's next? Is the RNC buying them a new and bigger house (or maybe 6 more houses so keep up with the McCains)?? The Palins cannot afford to buy their own clothes??? I find the RNC spending $150.000.00 to DRESS Palin and her family absolutely offensive and a HUGE INSULT to the people who have donated money to them and an even bigger insult to the taxpayers. Yes, the RNC is using OUR tax money---PUBLIC FUNDING---TO DRESS THE PALINS!!! This is beyond the pale!!! EVERYONE should OBJECT to this insanity!!

Palin aand McCain started the buzz about pigs and lipstick and plumbers and all the fluff that has nothing to do with running government. With her approval numbers falling among voters, Palin is proof positive that even 150K spent on clothes and accessories will not turn 'clueless' into 'knowledgeable'. For several years the GOP has gotten away with promoting shallow candidates like Dubya, but you can't fool all the people all the time.

Keep in mind that on the trail 7 days a week, 16-18 hours a day, a candidate may need to change several times a day (long hours, donut crumbs, different sorts of venues) so in a week they may need 14-21 outfits. Factor in dry cleaning downtime and you can see why it may be a bigger purchase than your typical kid's back to school wardrobe.

Also, keep in mind that in her case their rather large family needed clothes for the convention and appearances as well.

Funny, I don't see a lot of articles on what the men spoend on clothes so I did a little checking... Obama likes Burberry and HartMarx at $800-1000 a pop. Esquire chose him as one of the 20 best-dressed men in the world.

Maybe if Hillary didn't wear those dowdy pants suits to hide her saddle bag thighs you would comment on her wardrobe too.

Is this really news worthy? Has anyone ever reported on how much a male politician spent on designer suits? Give me a break, if all you have to attack her on is how much her clothes cost and who does her hair then she must be a pretty good politician.
---------------------------------
You are missing the point here. The thing we SHOULD ALL BE CONCERNED is the fact the RNC used donations from supporters to outfit Sarah and her family. Isn't it interesting that the RNC spends so much money on her clothes, haircare, and makeup, jewely, shoes, purses, etc?? And then on top of that they outfit Todd with suits, shirts, shoes, ties, tie pins, probably cufflinks too, and then they outfit the kids too?? What is the RNC going to do, use our tax dollars (public funding) to buy them a new house, or maybe six or seven, for te Palins to keep up with the McCains??

Gee, Micelle Obama goes to a regular store, buys dresses of the rack which look absolutely gorgeous on her, and she pays under $150 for it. And she uses her own money too!! Of course, MiChelle Obama buys clothing at big-name shops as well; however she USES HER OWN MONEY TO PAY FOR THOSE EXPENSIVE CLOTHES!!

McCain is NOT a good steward of the taxpayers money, nor is good steward of his supporters' donations. Shame on the RNC, John McCain, and Sarah Palin!! Folks, John McCain and Palin have been throwing the word, 'WELFARE' around a lot lately, perhaps in anticipation that word of the $150.000 RNC expenditures on the Palins. It looks to me like the republicans are most assuredly providing WELFARE to the Palins and their kids. Whoever heard of a party paying for their veep candidate's clothes, hairstylers, and make up?? This is outrageous and the American Public should be very angry and vegorously OBJECT to this blatant misuse of public funding (our taxes) and the supporters' donations!!! Most people that criticize this site for posting this article somehow miss the point. It is posted in the 'people' section so it is relevant .
What those people probably don't like is the deflation of a bubble:the carefully groomed image of the average 'hockey mum' .This image that was carefully crafted by media advisers ,just like joe the plumber ' are weapons to be used in a political campaign to attract voters .when you defend the interests of the wealthiest 1 percent of the americans only, you need something more to attract votes ,you need icons ans symbols which the voter can identify with :you sell your image with 'the average ice hockey mom,who knows what it is to struggle to raise your children .Sarah Palin was designed by the spin doctors to do just that .
The ugly reality is of course different .She bills the state of Alask 685 dollars per day for staying in her own house for ...travel expenses. She billed the state of Alaska thousands of dollars in travel expenses to bring her kids to parties and venues .All good taxpayer's mone .
How annoying now for all these spin doctors and campaign advisors to have this carefully inflated bubble explode in their face .so suddenly these campaign advisers pretend all that is irrelevant and 'plea, let's get bacl to the real problems ' .
Now which problems would that be ?The economy or the smear campaigns ?

If the candidates were taking the hard earned money away from Joe the Plumber's starving family to fund the election, then the wacko media might have some right to criticize their spending habits. But that's simply not the case.

The fact that certain reporters would bother to cast a disparaging eye on a $295 purchase for an infant just shows how disconnected these lefty press hounds really are. If they had done a little homework they would have been stunned to discover that caring for babies is not cheap.

The 'struggling americans' mentioned by the press are most likely not the same ones spending their cash to support our candidates. I mean let's face it, if you're dumb enough to give your money to a political candidate when you're family is 'struggling', then you have right to complain.
