Los Angeles - A mistrial was declared Tuesday in the case against singer Britney Spears for driving without a valid license, and the prosecutor said he would not seek a retrial.

The jury announced that it was deadlocked after three days of deliberations, with 10 jurors voting for acquittal and two for conviction.

The case stemmed from a Los Angeles fender-bender that in August 2007, in which Spears was found to be driving with a Louisiana license rather than a California license as required by law, as she had been a resident for years of the Pacific Coast state.

However, Spears's lawyers claimed she only lived in California to fight for custody of her two sons, and that she owned property in Louisiana and is registered to vote and pays taxes there. The prosecution pointed to an incomplete application for a California license filled out by Spears as proof that she considered herself a legal resident.
