'The Women' star - who was married to the actor from 1991 to 2000 - claims it was not her highly publicised affair with Russell Crowe which ruined their relationship, but Dennis' extra-marital activities.
Meg, who has a 16-year-old son Jack Henry with Dennis, said: "Dennis was not faithful to me for a very long time, and that was very painful. I found out more about that after I was divorced.
"I think Russell took a big hit. But he didn't break-up the marriage. He was definitely there at the end, but it wasn't his fault. I was a mess. I hurt him too at the end. I couldn't be in another long relationship, it wasn't the time for that. So I got out."
The 46-year-old actress - who has starred in romantic comedies including 'Sleepless in Seattle' and 'When Harry Met Sally' - also revealed she is uncomfortable with her reputation as an 'American sweetheart'.
She added in America's InStyle magazine: "It's an old-fashioned idea, so anachronistic. I understood it was a compliment about being lovable, and it felt nice, but it also felt, after a time, like ideas were being projected onto me that had nothing to do with me.
"The girl next door to what? I never felt like a very conventional person."
Meg also has a three-and-a-half-year-old daughter Daisy True, who she adopted from China in 2006.
