The 'Monster' actress - who has been in a relationship with actor-and-director Stuart Townsend for around six years - has never wanted to get married, but has not given up her dream of starting a family.
She said: "I've actually always known I wanted to have kids. Even when I was little, I never dreamed about walking down the aisle, but I always wanted to be a mom because I have always had such a close relationship with my own mom."
The 33-year-old star remains adamant she will never tie the knot, saying she thinks the institution is "beautiful" but not something she wants to get involved with.
Speaking on US TV show 'The View', she added: "I just know I don't want it, Stuart doesn't want it. Why mess with a good thing?"
The actress has previously admitted she thinks fate played a large part in her relationship with Stuart, who she met while shooting 2002 film 'Trapped'.
She said: "We met on set and we liked each other. It was like, 'You are awesome, and I'm never going to see you again.' But somehow we always ended up in the same places.
"I was in London working, and we were sitting in his apartment drinking wine, and before I knew it we were packing up his apartment and he was moving to Los Angeles. Someone wanted us to be together."
