The actor, who is also frontman for The Peth, was heavily intoxicated for the majority of the time the band spent in the recording studio making 'The Golden Mile'.
He said: "Ninety per cent of the time I was in the studio I was off my face. But we can do both. That's to do with craft, skill and talent. We've all got that tenfold."
The band - which also includes Super Furry Animals' Dafydd Ieuan and Guto Pryce - is already hard at work on their second album.
Rhys added: "It's going to be excellent."
'Notting Hill' actor Rhys - who is reportedly dating 'Maggie May' singer Rod Stewart's 29-year-old daughter Kimberly - recently revealed his involvement in the band helped him get over his break-up with actress Sienna Miller.
He said: "It had all kinds of poetic symmetry. I'm not the kind to lie down on a couch. This band came bang on the right time. I thought, 'Right, I'm going back to gang life.' "
