Sarah Palin's lipstick comment fuels Obama

Presidential candidate Barack Obama had a retort on a joke delivered by Sarah Palin at the Republican National Convention, who said the only difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom was lipstick.
The expression has inspired a new volley of campaign rhetoric.
Obama equated McCain and Palin's tactics and views as "stink" on a dead fish and "lipstick on a pig."
The Wall Street Journal reports that the war of words heated up in Lebanon, Virginia as Obama criticized McCain-Palin policies which were void of real change.
“You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig,” Obama said at an event Tuesday night.
The Obama camp has noted that McCain's political talking points have hijacked theirs with regards to "change" versus "experience", the earlier McCain rallying mantra.
“You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called ‘change,’ it’s still going to stink,” Obama said. “After eight years, we’ve had enough of the same old thing. It’s time to bring about real change to Washington and that’s the choice you’ve got in this election.”

McCain and Palin? Committed to change? Are you kidding me? These two have no clue about 'reality' in 2008-America! McCain couldn't remember how many houses he and his wife own, yet has the unmitigated gall to suggest that the Obama's are elitists. Sarah Palin 'governs' Alaska about as effectively as George W. Bush 'presides' over the United States. Enough said.
HAHAHAHAHA!!! In YOUR FACE McSame/Palin!!! Republicans are such wimps! LOL.
Hahaha. Fantastic. I'm glad Obama is finally calling Palin out for what she is. Her policies are despicable. We need someone who supports the people - the hardworking, bleeding middle-class who suffers at the hands of the Republican elite. We want change, and we want it now.
Students for Obama!
that's right m f republicans.
Hussein for President ya hear
Someone is going to turn around and accuse Obama of calling Palin a pig... and he's going to have to spend time denying it... stupid move on his articulate part, IMHO
Uhhh, Obama and his campaign says he absolutely did NOT have Palin in mind when he said it.
So is it great politics, or is Obama lying?
When you see a 20-point swing in your female support disappear in 12 days then it's time to pull out the 'He Man Woman Haters Club' membership card and take your balls home.
Obama proved that he hates women when he flipped off Hillary and now he's playing it safe by using a play on words and calling Mrs. Palin a pig. Nice.
McCain is such a jerk! He used THE EXACT SAME LINE and referred directly to Sen. Clinton! The Republicans are such whiny losers.
Obama was pointing out that these Republicans offering 4 more years of the same BUSH bad policies can't be dressed up.

When Obama starts loosing the games, he get mad and so dirty words start getting his glib. Now, it shows the real Barack Hussein Obama.
Go, Obama, Go! Don't let these liars suck this country down. I believe Americans are going to use their common sense not to vote for these pigs.
Obama/Biden 08
I think the polls got to him finally. He has totally lost it now.
Good timing Barrack and props to your well thought out strategy of wowing back those white lipstick hillary's woman voters.
I see Hillary-Barrack in 2012.
Obama didn't call Palin a pig... it is so obvious, I've got to call this spade a spade.
Hmmmmm.... I wasn't saying anything about Obama, I was talking about what he said.
Does that sound like Obama's argument?
So this is what the Obama campaign has resorted to - calling names like a school yard bully? One question: Does anyone like the school yard bully other than their toadies?
With one sentence, Barack Obama lost thousands of votes because everyone knows that as soon as you resort to name calling, you've got nothing else to offer. He could say a lot of things about Palin, her policies, the decisions she made while in office, etc, but as soon as he called her a pig, he stooped to a sub-intellectual level. That might work for some people, but anyone with half a brain will recognize it for what it is.
To Peggy,
Obama didn't pick Hillary not just because she is woman. He think our country first. Don't we need all need to do the same. We need to set aside our personal feelings. We need to think our future and our children's future. If we vote for McShame and Pig Sarah, what would be left for us and for our children. We are working hard for nothing. We are just making these lobbyist richer while we are getting early in the morning to work for them. We need to Wake Up and stand for our right.
Goldieluck want the rich man's money, and robbin' hood is going to deliver it to her
you guys are nuts! obama is nothing but a charismatic speaker - not a leader, just a talker who tells you what you want to hear, just as big a hypocrite as ANY politician can't believe so many people eat it up
can't believe you all buy into Obama's crap, all he is is a charismatic speaker who's awesome at telling you what you want to hear but in the end, he's just as big a hypocrite as ANY other POLITICIAN - the only thing he's going to 'change' is his lifestyle
Now this is just plain bickering! I defended Palin when attacks were geared towards her family. I heard what Sen Obama said in detail and did not feel like it was directed towards Gov. Palin. Read the transcript. As a solid republican supporter I must agree that it is a cheap use of the sexist card by the republican party. Do research and you will find it is common Washington verbage also used by McCain at one point. Lets grow up and wait to hear what she has to say on her views and direction of the country. Lets not play the victims when we are just as much to blame on scrutiny of our opponents! To be frank bickering like this and playing victim is really turning me and alot of other McCain/Palin supporters off. It is getting to the point that sheerly the media and our opponents feel like they are walking on thin ice when mentioning her. Almost as if she is untouchable. C'mon....Thanks!
McCain/Palin - the shoe is on the other foot now so it pinches eh? When Palin was having the time of of life with a very disgraceful behavior at the Republican convention everyone thought it was hilarious. So how come we are all supposed to act like adults now?
Interesting how lefties justify personal attacks as an equal response to the hard truths expressed about 'The One'. Funny how it is down played by the leftist media with out any recourse on 'The One' for his obvious classless name calling. There would be an unrelenting backlash from the left media if the right made any hint of these types of remarks or name calling. Ironic that the 'lipstick' comment from the right was made about and from the person making the comment. Regarding the truths that has been spoken and pointed out from the right, the lefts only answer is to distort it, run from it, deny it or suppress it. I don't think 'The One' is going to have his opposition thrown off the ballot this time via his strategy of subversive slandering of the opponent or by having them removed by technicality like his last two elections. Sorry, but your dealing with America now, not your corrupt Chicago machine. America was formed on principals completely opposite of what the democratic party stands for (big government that is responsible to solve everyone's personal problems via taxation without representation). No thanks, I'm responsible for my own problems and I don't mind helping others, but not with my government forcing me to.
you HAVE GOT to be kidding me. Please, to the media, stop wasting time on this junk, because that is what it is--utter bull!!. Focus on the real issues, stop the soap operas and the gossip.
The real pig in this arguement is the PORK that Sarah Palin has been producing NOT the way she looks. Does anyone really believe that he was saying she looks like a pig. I mean she is undeniably beautiful. I do believe it was in reference to the 'bulldog pig thing'. But he was not talking about her looks he was talking about all of the spending. Like how she has had the State of Alaska pay her traveling expenses to live at home. And how she cancelled the bridge to no where, but kept the money. Why doesnt anyone talk about this instead of making it sound like he is calling her ugly. COmeon.
The question is: are we going to let the media run this election again? Tonight CNN was trying to cover all the ignorant stuff Sarah Palin had done.
They said Palin did not ban books but only asked the librarian how to ban books. They did not mention she tried to have the librarian fired when she objected Palin's idea of banning books. So she didn't ban books, just tried to find out how to do it and tried to fire someone who refused to do it. What?
They said Sarah Palin loves nature because she picks berries.
They said Sarah Palin kills animals [unnecessarily] just to ensure the sufficient supply of food on Alaskans' tables.
They did not say Palin denies the human causes of global warming.
Say NO to CNN, FOX, CBS, ABC, NBC...and above all, Palin.
Obama's lack of judgement in making such a stupid remark is just one example why he will lose in November. I can't wait to see that 'pig' slap that stupid smirk off his face.
'Obama equated McCain and Palin's tactics and views as 'stink' on a dead fish and 'lipstick on a pig.' '
Obama never called HER a pig. he was referring to their TACTICS and STANCE on the issues.
Doesn't anyone in the GOP understand what an aphorism is? I guess this term is greek to them. Literally. Aphorism (literally distinction or definition, from Greek). Denotes an original thought, spoken or written in an easily memorable form. Example: 'You can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig'.
Excellent! About time... these silly republicans can dish it out, but can't take it... may these hypocrites be voted out into oblivion. They have no shame.

McCain was probably tired after visiting all 57 States!!
You lefties are unreal!!
I'm personally voting for Bob Barr. The 2 main parties are just two faces to the same old ugly coin but.. If someone gauranteed that mccain would die within a month of being elected, I'd vote in that direction cuz I think his vp running mate is hot.
from Maureen Dowd:
ABC's Charlie Gibson has his work cut out for him. His problem isn’t coming up with a list of questions, but finding time to drill deeply enough into all the unknown territory of her life. It’s a task that dwarfs the drilling job the oil companies are doing on Alaska’s North Slope.
In the end, none of it may matter, since Palin has rocketed in the polls, drawing women and men with her vapid — if vivacious and visceral — scripted cheerleading. But if you’re reading this, Charlie, we want to know everything, including:
What kind of budget-cutter makes a show of getting rid of the state plane, then turns around and bills taxpayers for the travel of her husband and kids between Juneau and Wasilla and sticks the state with a per-diem tab to stay in her own home?
Why was Sarah for the Bridge to Nowhere before she was against the Bridge to Nowhere, and why was she for earmarks before she was against them? And doesn’t all this make her just as big a flip-flopper as John Kerry?
What kind of fiscal conservative raises taxes and increases budgets in both her jobs — as mayor and as governor?
When the phone rings at 3 a.m., will she call the Wasilla Assembly of God congregation and ask them to pray on a response, as she asked them to pray for a natural gas pipeline?
Does she really think Adam, Eve, Satan and the dinosaurs mingled on the earth 5,000 years ago?
Why put out a press release about her teenage daughter’s pregnancy and then spend the next few days attacking the press for covering that press release?
As Troopergate unfolds here — an inquiry into whether Palin inappropriately fired the commissioner of public safety for refusing to fire her ex-brother-in-law — it raises this question: Who else is on her enemies list and what might she do with the F.B.I.?
Does she want a federal ban on trans fat in restaurants and a ban on abortion and Harry Potter? And which books exactly would have landed on the literature bonfire if she had had her way with that Wasilla librarian?
Just how is it that Fannie and Freddie have cost taxpayers money (since they haven’t yet)?
Does she talk in tongues or just eat caribou tongues?
What does she have against polar bears?
The republican strategy here seems clear. Make a victim out of the pretty white woman, and point the finger at Obama (black guy) attacking her. Geesh. There is no level low enough the republican's won't sink to it. The've been calling on the press to show 'deference' to Palin too. Trying to make a case that the press has attacked her as well. Trying to make her seem fragile. Honestly this self styled pit bull doesn't need protection--she'd be another Cheney more likely.
As a Republican who almost surely would have voted for these guys, the gig is up. I nearly bought in on the convention rap until I saw Jon Stewart showing John McCain 'I don't know...' comments on a bevy of press shows I'd seen. (This after McCain told the nation, 'I know how to fix it' and 'I know' at last week's convention... I watched with amusement when Stewart played G.W.Bush proclaiming, 'I'll change Washington', 'I'll work across the aisle'. Then he played John McCain saying the exact same lines...
I began to have doubts whether picking Palin was so smart and not just a cynical attempt to embrace the right wing of what has become a pandering and increasingly cynical party. She's certainly *not* ready to be president of America. That's nothing to do with being a woman... but everything to do with NEVER having been in Washington to know what the pressures and FEDERAL issues are like in complexity or breadth. The affects of any decision are broad and felt by hundreds of millions of people, not just 60,000. Palin's ONLY dealings with Washington have been thru lobbyists, so how smart are we in representing that she knows -or will change- the corrupt DC culture of politics. That culture, of lobbying and pressure, is the one she employed to get millions of the 'Bridge to Nowhere money'. And if Alaska is enjoying a cash surplus and has NO income or sales tax, how could she possibly have 'CUT TAXES'? If her state didn't need the funds, how greedy and corrupt was it to press for the earmarked funds???
Her convention attacks were pointed, scripted and contained at least five outright false statements according to factcheck.org... Hardly the stuff we can trust if we are going to be the Party of 'change' Furthermore, I'm tired of being treated with disrespect and as if I'm not intelligent enough to verify that these gross misrepresentations are more of the SAME pessimism of our current party leaders. I keep wondering if McCain is aware that the internet is in widespread use!
I deepened my doubts when I watched McCain's, lobbyist handlers tell the press that Palin was 'hands off' for tough questions on her experience because it was an 'insult to women'! That isn't what they said in Meet the Press or Face the Nation when the topic was Hillary Clinton.
Now comes the pig 'defense'.
What an outrageous and cynical attack to evoke a sexist label for one's own purpose! Obviously my party, whose head is still George W. Bush, who said 'HE'D run as the change candidate' will stop at nothing to win the Presidency.
It's okay for McCain to insult women but treating those females supporters as if they are brainless fools misled by cycnical finger pointing and accusations. This is the final straw.
Not only will I not vote for John McCain and Sarah Palin, I WILL now vote for Barack Obama who showed me the Presidential character, strength and GUTS to IMMEDIATELY call these latest misrepresentations what they actually are: CYNICAL AND DESPERATE.
McCain/Palin are not 'Mavericks' they are mere rustlers trying to put their brand of snide and cynicism on a respectable, qualified 'black' candidate. And that's what this campaign is really about: a 'black' person's fitness to be an American leader.
America, grow up! The world is waiting for us to lead again.
Palin is a Pig … an EARMARK PORKER …
Palin made Alaska #1 per capita the highest state in the union at $1000 per AK resident with pork barrel earmark dollars that she brought back to Alaska.
meanwhile .. the PORK PIG Palin …
claims to be an earmark reformer ? LOL!
Palin's 'speech' at the RNC (written for her by a speech writer) did not impress me at all. It was divisive and full of inaccuracies (euphemism here). McCan/Palin have reduced this election to second-grade tattletaling. Anyone with any understanding of English knows Obama used a common expression. He has too much class to call an opponent a pig. Though if he did, it would not be inaccurate.
Let's call a 'spade a spade' (another old saying) Of course he meant it as a jibe towards Palin. I can not vote for someone this 'unaware' and 'unpresidential'. This poor choice of words will cost Obama millions of women's votes over the next few days. Hillary should start warming up for 2012. I was for Hillary in the primary but I'm switching to PALIN/mccain after this stupid comment!
The 'lipstick on a pig' statement was, as I understood it, an analogy for (the Obama campaign's) interpretation/perception of McCain's policy stances - as they relate to his (John McCain's) recent references to 'change.' As another article stated, Sarah Palin hadn't yet been mentioned at that point in the speech. McCain's campaign interpreted it as this article has - namely, by assuming that a reference to the word 'lipstick' equated to an attack on 'Pitbull-with-lipstick' Sarah Palin.
On closer analysis, one finds an interesting trivia point:
The phrase used was 'lipstick on a pig,' not 'lipstick on a sow.' I think a more direct attack on Ms. Palin would have involved the latter statement - Obama should know proper gender terms for pigs - else, he might have just as easily substituted 'pig' for 'pitbull.'
My point; this is yet another battle of contexts. I think reviewing the statement's original and proper context should clear up the contention.
This non-issue is just another example of why the Palin pick was so reckless. She was about the most divisive possible choice, so it's a baldfaced lie for McCain to claim to be a uniter. Just look at the sniping on the net the last 10 days---he is dividing America.
McCain would rather divide America than lose an election. Some patriot.
Sarah Palin is a pig with lipstick, if she can't take on this little political spar, then she's unfit to be 2nd in command to governing the nation. Republican's tears over this is pathetic and will only just emboden us Democrats to go at them harder.
The only pig here is Obama, and I am loving all this.
The liberals are going nuts over the female Ronald Reagan and Obama has slipped into junior high name calling out of desperation. I wonder if the Clintons wrote that pig in lipstick line for him. Sucker!
You can name call all you want. You can even make up stories about Palin if it makes you feel better about your dark days ahead.
I, however, will have an excellent day on November 5th because I will be laughing at you.
Obama, what a joke. Hussien talking behind peoples back in California. Doesnt want to talk religion because of his shameful reverend and muslim background. The only reason anyone could vote for him is because of race or the thought that our enemies might be more accepting of a muslim name. Not only does he have no backbone but anyone that votes for him too.
I am amazed at the comments that I have just read. This must be a “bash Republican” website! The truth is that Obama has nothing to offer but inexperience. While I admit that Obama may be a tall, handsome, charismatic guy – and McCain just a balding, old guy – McCain demonstrated brilliant political strategy by inviting Palin to run on his ticket. Palin has much more charm and charisma than Obama and has won over most of the swing vote. McCain is smart enough to know that presidential races are really popularity contests and has showed savvy by choosing Palin to bolster his ticket’s prominence. If you want a president who can lead a great nation and outwit the enemy – big oil, Jihadists, Putin, etc. – then the winner should be obvious.
Is SENATURD JOE'it-was-a-hairplug-not-a-brain-transplant'BIDEN a 'special needs child'??? HOW ELSE DO YOUSE EXPLAIN ALL THE 'SLIMEY THINGS' THAT COME OUTTA HIS BIG YAP??? Ah DEMBHOLE preaching/promoting MARXIST/SOCIALISM - only leaning stink/smell at their end!!! DEMBHOLES always the stinky/smelly wankers!!! Ha.
I would hope to god these people who are jumping all over the 'lipstick' statement would get off their high horse long enough to read the real facts about this statement - that McCain said the same thing months ago among other people. It in no way reflected on Palin or are they getting a little sensitive? She has been good at tooting her own horn and making herself out to be the second coming now let's see what she can do with questions outside of a written script. Of course, unless she's been privy to the questions in advance. Let's get down to the serious business about this election and cut out all the so-called crap about nothing which is taking way too much time that can be better used. I think the statements attributed to Maureen Dowd need to be given some intense consideration. Unless something happens to McCain if he gets elected, how important is the office of VP anyway. Don't they usually fade into the background?
The overwhelming majority of these comments only serve to prove the embarrassing reality that the people are, by and large, ignorant, self-centered, uneducated, unevolved, mindless, cruel, insipid, self-destructive, delusional, cowardly, vicious, shamelessly obsequious, hopelessly confused and, ultimately..... DESERVING of the idiot government they get....no matter WHOM they elect!!
Obama doesn't hate women, that's not a correct remark. He's scared to get beat by one.
Ok no one is copying anyone. That line is Not copywrited. But It is obvious that he was reffering to Palin. But then again, Obama does make a lot of cheap blows that everyone looks over...
When McCain used the exact same phrase regarding Senator Hillary Clinton on 10/11/07, it's 'obvious' he meant it in exactly the same sense Obama meant it. The next time he opens his mouth Senator McCain should explain why a woman of Senator Clinton's accomplishments (raised an intelligent daughter and put her through college, married to ONE man, conducted a DIGNIFIED campaign in the primaries) should be referred to as a 'pig'. To each his own, but I think that the senator from POW should do the 'honorable' thing and apologize for his sexist, degrading comments before he says anything about Obama.
No matter who the next president will be, one think won't change for sure - the way people all over the world see americans - OBESE AND VAPID!
Thx, mate! They are all pigs anyway!
obama: you really goofed up big time... you can't quit your church this time, you have no excuse for cutting up women.. i think you should quit while you still have some dignity left...
hey guys: wake up and smell the grass... obama was definitely talking about a woman or else he wouldn't of said lipstick....
you talk real change but done nothing compared to sarah who has rolled up her sleeves got involved and made a diference.
full of lovely sentencesis obama and nothing else.with sarah things will get done.mcain has the intelligence.obama is a bore.her popularity will seal a huge victory.
So is it safe to presume that democrates now want to turn their backs on women... haven't democrates ALWAYS wanted to 'improve' living conditions for us women??? and now the republicans are the ones actually 'promoting' womanhood to VP? Democraps had a chance and didn't even take hillary as a VP. Hell the last democrate in office used women in office that's for sure... for sex. HAHAHA what next obama will hide osama in the white house, and call it interogation after 'americans' find out? politics ain't pretty, but by their fruits ye shall know them. Democrates oppress women more than republicans.
hilarious! glad to see obama have some balls and say what he truly feels. i would love to hear what these politicians are really thinking half the time.
screw you bitches, mccain * palin will kick ass!

I think its about time that Obama called out McCain. The Republicans are hypocrites. McCain himself used the line not too long ago - which was fine - but now that Obama has used it to describe the filth that is McCain, he draws the ire of women as being sexist. Women all over the world willnot get ahead by having double standards of their own when they blame men fro the same.
