She failed to mention that she's been skinny her whole life, despite eating everything in sight to try to gain weight at one time. She also says that eating disorders don't have anything to do with the worship of thin women, that it's all the parents' fault for not loving their little girl enough. What a moron. Loving your little girl makes her feel loved, not pretty, especially when the world is telling her she's ugly. Trust me, I know first hand. Since when is she a psychiatrist? I don't know when the last time was that I'd been so offended as when I heard her make that claim.
Thank you for listening-I just had to get that off my chest.
As a eating disorder counselor and recovering bulimic, I have to agree more with Gisele. Eating disorders are about low self-esteem, and often stem from dysfunctional childhoods, abuse, etc. If a child is brought up in a healthy, loving, supportive family, it is less likely they'll develop an eating disorder. Loving your little girl and appropriate parenting will help her feel good about herself inside and out, and she'll be less susceptible to images of ultra thin women in the media. These images may pressure a girl with already low self-esteem to resort to dangerous tactics to achieve what she deems to be perfection in the hopes of finally getting the love and acceptance she’s missing.
