Life lessons: Palin's daughter's baby daddy not keen on any kids

Vice presidential pick Sarah Palin's surprising announcement Monday was that her 17-year-old daughter Bristol is five months pregnant, and the news media has unearthed some details about the unborn child's father, 18-year-old hockey player, Levi Johnston.

Rabid pro-lifers love Palin; those who value education and giving their children a solid start in life by making sure consequences are hammered home find her tedious.

Moose killer Sarah Palin was announced as presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain's running mate on Friday.

Bristol and Levi the baby daddy, from his MySpace page

Johnston's  MySpace page, (which has since been removed) revealed the hunk from  Wasilla, Alaska, listed him as being in a relationship, but under his "children" status, Johnston opted for "I don't want kids."

He's a self-described "redneck" who likes to snowboard, ride dirt bikes, go camping and "hang out with the boys." He also enjoys fishing, and warned that, if you mess with him, "I'll kick [your] ass."

In a statement - Sarah Palin said she and her husband, Todd, are "proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support."

Allegedly Bristol and Johnston will marry.

In Palin's hometown of Wasilla, Bristol's pregnancy was old news, and no big deal to the townsfolk.

Palin family friend Karen Rhoades told the Chicago Tribune that Bristol's pregnancy and motherhood is a testament to the governor's ideals and her own decision not to terminate her most recent pregnancy; Palin learned during her pregnancy that her son Trig would have Down syndrome.

"You can teach sex education all you want, but human beings are human beings," Rhoades said. "Sarah chose life and therefore her daughter saw a great example and she is choosing life as well."

Some would argue that sex education is just that, an education in how to manage and handle one of the biggest decisions in a young person's life.  Also to avoid the obvious pitfalls of pregnancy and sexually transmitted dieseases, especially in Alaska where the STD rate among teens is the highest in the United States.

Seems like John Edwards, while running for the Democratic presidential nomination, and fathering a baby while having an extramarital affair against his cancer-stricken wife, is a much bigger deal than an Alaskan teenager getting pregnant. Where are the media's priorities?

I love how Palin and the right wing press are applauding Bristol's 'decision' to keep the baby and marry.

Decision? You mean she had a Choice?!

Well, that sounds like pro-choice to me! Why didn't Palin and the press call it like it is: they're forcing her to have this child. And, if the boyfriend's MySpace page is to be believed (no reason not to) it's pretty much at gunpoint.

Jessica,
You commentary was so funny that I laughed and spilled 'hot coffee' on myself.

You are dead on..it's pretty much a shot gun wedding and the poor baby has no hope in hell of having a normal happy life. So, this really shows how Abstinence is a failed practice. Thus, we need to look at Sarah Palin's ability to make 'sound and fair' decisions on behalf of our country.

It is absolutely funny how anyone in this day and time in the USA could give a tinkers damn about a seventeen year old girl getting pregnant out of wedlock! Especially those concerns expressed by what seem to be a group of people who are doing their utmost (at any other time) to relegate the institution of marriage itself to the dustbin of American history.

The media (classic and web) that are making such a hubbub of this are disingenuous at least. The individuals who express so much 'concern' are no better and lack any semblance of historical perspective, critical thinking, compassion, or experience with raising children.

In this episode we see the re-institution, by these people, of the dark-ages mentality of 'the sins of the fathers' being visited upon their children - but only in reverse.

My wish for each of those people is simply to become a parent and know the joys and utter suffering that may entail.

To RM: in your desperation (suddenly bringing in Edwards and inventing the idea that there is some baby involved), you seem to have lost sight of the people in *this* election. In fact, we should thank you for reminding us that John McCain cheated on his wife, having an affair with an heiress, after his own wife had been disabled in a car crash and was no longer the beauty queen he'd wanted. Well John's got his beauty queen 'soul mate' now, Klondike Barbie. (Youtube 'wandering eyes' very funny)

Now let's set aside the fact that the future of America has suddenly been reduced to an episode of Desperate Housewives. The point is the hypocrisy of the right wingers (like Klondike). Just imagine the constant thrashing the right and their loudmouth Rush Limbaugh-types would give Hilary or Michelle Obama as mothers in this situation!

Further, Palin says she favors abstinence over sex ed. That means that, unless she's going to flip-flop (again, e.g., her bridge to nowhere flip flop), she likewise favors unprotected premarital sex, teen pregnancy, getting married at 17, over sex education.

Sara Pallin is dangerously uneducated (journalism degree from Idaho (and what were her grades?)) and unworldly (she didn't even get a passport until last year); she doesn't believe that evolution has occurred; she recently said she has no opinion on iraq; she legislates superflous violence toward animals (but calls herself pro-life, what a crock!); she is nothing more than a stone-age regressive brought in by McCain to pander to the uneducated Christian right wackos. No way in heaven she is capable of saving our economy, protecting our nation, should 72 yr old McCain be called on 'to answer for his sins.'

I really have great sympathy for this young girl to have been forced into this incredible spotlight, and I blame her mother. She's way too young to be making adult decisions. At least now that the entire world is privy to her personal life, she maybe can quit having to hold and carry around the baby to hide her pregnancy. Time for it's father to step in.

Seems that unprotected sex is not the only vice her daughters are into.

Drinking (Whiskey, not beer)
Smoking Pot
Bi-Sexual Lesbian Makeouts

When this happens in a small town, to a white girl, they come from a good family and just made a mistake.

When this happens in a large city, to a black girl, they are troubled youth who are ruining our country.

Palin wants to pass laws telling us how to raise our kids. She wants to birth control off the table, stop talking about sex in schools, stop teaching health sciences.

Its time to stop trying to run this country like we all live in a small town.

Kids in big cities need options for birth control, drug and alcohol addiction, and sexual abuse.

If the rich, white Gov. of Alaska can't keep her kids off unprotected sex and alcohol, how can the she expect the single black mom in a ghetto to do it?

Dude says he will kick *ss but can't open a rubber wrapper? Tough guy! He likes to fish but gets fined for taking protected Salmon out of a river, not in season. Hanging with his boys, getting a fish fry going.

In my youth on dirt bikes, trespassing was the thrill to do on someone else's land.

Likely he and crew trespassed too, ripping up trails and through lands without environmental care and abandon. Some beers, I'm pretty sure of.

Too many things can occur that stop pregnancy. Timing in a month, technigues during the event and the many products of birth control available. It shows too people very immature.

No teenagers life is more beneficial with a pregnancy occuring. No matter the success of Palin family, it's the mother and father key to that child's growth and success.

The daughter with a book deal likely being offered real soon, will want her seperation. Does the guy have a job or skills? So he's an unemployed potential father and she's a unwed teenage mother.

Statistically not a good place to start and both with only high school educations

Eventually they will get married, how about when their 30!

While it disturbing to hear that the would be father is a self confessed 'F-ing Redneck', this is nothing more then a teenage Christian girl succumbing to a 'BAD' boy for his rebel charm. My concerns are with the Republican platform, which is nothing more than a continuation of the same failed policies that were brought to you by Bush and the neo-cons. Sad but true, another 4 years of that will certainly lead us into a modern day 'dark age'. Maybe this is the end times as foretold in Revelation. Hey Republicans...be aware...Lucifer is counting on it.

Golly, whats new?

Honestly, it amazes me at how, after these liberals abused every drug in the 60's, engaged in every sordid sex escapade, and strattled every rock star they could, that, suddenly, they go prude on a single seventeen year old in Alaska. Obama's mom was only a year older when she had him.

neither Obama nor McCain can speak to all the issues around birth control, sex education, and whether a fetus is more worthy of being protected than animals are.

Because neither one gets it. Obama said that family is off limits but this case is all about how the right wingers are soooo wrong when it comes to reproductive issues.

It shouldn't be off limits at all and the democrats never stand up to the idiotic republicans and here we go again. Same crapola.

Sex education should be a basic right and so should access to birth control. She got pregnant because of all the unneccessary uptightness around using birth control.

I bet she didn't even know what time of the month she couldn't get pregnant and what time of the month she was the most likely to get pregnant (it's called ovulation girls).

How in the hell did you even come close to relating abstinence to unprotected premarital sex? Wow... you are a colossal moron.

Pacmat also stated:

She has a college degree. Congrats on your subjectively biased slander in regards to her chosen establishment of higher education and courses. Damn you're dumb.

Apparently you need a passport and to have traveled to Europe in order to be deemed a competent academic mind? Again, you're an idiot.

So she doesn't believe in evolution as the absolute truth of the universe and our world as we know it. Perhaps if you actually learned anything outside of highschool freshman biology you might understand that evolution is only a THEORY. Provide an absolute fact before you open your vomit hole.

'Legislates superfluous violence'... wow... nice Cal Berkely creative writing course! You learn that from all your left-lib lesbo aunts? Awesome. It's called 'Hunting'. And, again, being that you are incredibly uneducated in seemingly all things relevant here, I don't expect you to understand the cause and effect of hunting and why it is even in place and is promoted by every National Wildlife entity in the world.

Sounds like you need to educate yourself and try to think for yourself rather than regurgitate all the slanderous vomit that you soak up so well from your subjectively maligning party-biased superiors.

sp4 - on the contrary, Mccain was specific and honest -life begins at the monent of birth. Obama on the other hand, could not seem to muster an answer, courious for a lawyer who must know that all law is based on someone's morality...unless you graduate from Harvard.

Because neither one gets it. Obama said that family is off limits but this case is all about how the right wingers are soooo wrong when it comes to reproductive issues.

sp4 - Wrong?...so much for choice, eh? Curious, in that it is the left who seem to be the prudes here...

It shouldn't be off limits at all and the democrats never stand up to the idiotic republicans and here we go again. Same crapola.

sp4 - that is because, like taxes, the war, abortion, etc., the dems never can run on their beliefs because they are not actually popular. They seek to avoid the issue (see?) because they would rather institutionalize it in the courts as opposed to letting the legislative take a swak at it.

Sex education should be a basic right and so should access to birth control. She got pregnant because of all the unneccessary uptightness around using birth control.

sp4 - where have you been? The libnazi ed lobby has pushed this in the kids faces for the last 35 years and look at the result. Kids think anything touted by adults is OK and this is what the sex ed mess has produced.

I bet she didn't even know what time of the month she couldn't get pregnant and what time of the month she was the most likely to get pregnant (it's called ovulation girls).

Alaska uber allesSep 2nd, 2008 - 23:28:58

What may prove to be the single most damaging angle to Sarah Palin's role on the Republican Party ticket is Palin's association with the Alaska Independence Party

It's practically impossible to make a 'Country First' argument when your running mate is affiliated with a political party that puts country second.

Officials of the Alaskan Independence Party say that Palin was once so independent, she was once a member of their party, which since the 1970s has been pushing for a legal vote for Alaskans to decide whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the United States. And while McCain's motto -- as seen in a new TV ad -- is 'Country First,' the AIP's motto is the exact opposite -- 'Alaska First -- Alaska Always.'

Lynette Clark, the chairman of the AIP, tells ABC News that Palin and her husband Todd were members in 1994, even attending the 1994 statewide convention in Wasilla. Clark was AIP secretary at the time.

'We are a state's rights party,' Clark -- a self-employed goldminer -- tells ABC News. The AIP has 'a plank that challenges the legality of the Alaskan statehood vote as illegal and in violation of United Nations charter and international law.'

So, why all the hate on this post?

Nobody has sex here? All of you slamming the girl for having sex and unintentionally getting pregnant.

Stupid decision? Yes.

But why are the men not held more accountable for pregnancy. I have known guys that intentionally get a girl pregnant -- two morons, each with 5 kids from 5 different women. It makes me sick to think there are stupid girls/women out there to actually have sex with such an ass****.

Is this guy one of those? Too many unreliable blogs going on this topic to discern.

So, what is someone to do? Either way is not going to please those with their minds already made up.

Have the baby: the response, 'What a hypocrite for not having sex education, look at her daughter getting buck wild'.

Have an abortion: the response, 'See! I knew they were hypocrites'

Overall, in the end, the daughter has a big task ahead of her and her soon-to-be 'husband?' for raising that kid. I certainly do not wish it on anybody, but it should be an example of what not to do until you are ready.

Girls, protect yourself! In the end, you are the one to get the badgering, not the impregnator.

Another clue to all of you lumping anybody who does not agree with your liberal ideals: Quit lumping everybody else as a right-wing, evangelical. There may be those out there, but each generation seems to becoming more of an independent thinker than a Kool-Aid drinker. Many other people seem to choose issues, not parties. Maybe you should become a little more critical of your sources for information and ideas.

After all, this is politics, so we are all doomed.
