Cheryl Cole's diamond cake

Cheryl Cole was stunned after her husband Ashley splashed out £5,000 on a diamond covered birthday cake.

The soccer star - who was accused this year of cheating on Cheryl with three different women - was keen to make the Girls Aloud singer's 25th birthday on Tuesday (30.06.08) extra special so had the handbag shaped cake decorated with edible jewels.

A source said: "Cheryl couldn't believe it when she saw the cake - it was absolutely beautiful. She was thrilled that Ashley was making such an effort for her birthday."

The cake was presented to Cheryl during a meal at exclusive Manchester restaurant Wings, where Ashley ordered staff to change their silver cod in champagne sauce to tofu for the vegetarian singer.

As well as the meal and the cake, Ashley gave Cheryl the deeds to a villa in Spain's Costa del Sol, the place where they recently attempted to repair their fragile relationship.

Earlier in the day, the athlete surprised Cheryl by throwing her an unexpected birthday bash at the Manchester hotel where she is staying while she films British TV talent show 'The X Factor'.

A source said: "Cheryl was beaming from ear-to-ear when Ashley turned up. She didn't realise he was going to put in an appearance and was stunned when he arrived.

"She loves Ashley to bits and she wants to put all the bad times behind her."
