Gwyneth Paltrow says her return to acting was like a "lifeline."
The 'Iron Man' actress took time off work following the births of her two children - four-year-old Apple and two-year-old Moses - but was happy to step in front of the camera again.
After starring in the superhero movie, Gwyneth won a part in 'Two Lovers' - the film which has reignited her thespian fires.
She said: "It gave to me kind of a lifeline. I feel like I was really able to be very free and raw and true.
"Going from being a mother at home for a long time, which is the greatest joy of my life, to feel like an artist again - that was a gift."
However, Gwyneth admitted she was worried Hollywood might not welcome her back with open arms when she decided to return.
She added to America's OK! magazine: "I really did not know if there would be a place for me any more. Hollywood is pretty cutthroat, and everybody's got a short memory and there's always somebody younger or hotter or prettier, or whatever."
