Harrison Ford has become a director of the Archaeological Institute of America.

The actor, who stars as an adventure-seeking archaeologist in the 'Indiana Jones' movies, has been invited to join the Boston-based organisation because his role has helped encourage awareness of the subject.

The organisation's president, Brian Rose, praised Harrison's contribution, saying that 'Indy' has played a major part in boosting interest in archaeological exploration.

It has not been explained what Harrison's role as a director of the Institute will involve.

The 65-year-old actor reprises his role as the dare-devil archaeologist in 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' - the fourth instalment of the popular series, which is released in cinemas next week.

The movie comes 18 years after the third film, 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade', was released, but Harrison recently admitted he wouldn't hesitate to agree to shoot a fifth.

He said: "I would do another one in a New York minute. It would be interesting to see Indy in his 60s, but we might have to decide between putting him on a college campus or in a rocking chair!"
