Actually the shoes the Pope wears closely follow the custom of the old Romans who's Councils had three badges of office--red shoes, an iron ring, and a purple stripe on the edge of their togas. His shoes are not made by Padra, but rather a shoemaker who lives in northern Italy. The take about a month to make, and are purchased at the rather reasonable (for the effort that went into them) price of about $800. Also true, popes have favored red shoes going back to when they AND whom ever were councils that year were wearing them.
