Pete Doherty has become obsessed with Scientology.

The Babyshambles rocker is reading up on the bizarre sci-fi cult - of which Hollywood stars Tom Cruise, Giovanni Ribisi and John Travolta are devout followers - because his lover DJ Nadine Ruddy is a believer in the religion.

A source told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "Nadine is really into Scientology. She takes her beliefs very seriously.

"Pete's chatted a lot with her about it. He went out and bought some books to read up about it. He just wanted to find out more about Nadine and what she believes in."

The Church of Scientology was founded by American sci-fi writer L. Ron Hubbard in 1951.

The author claimed extra-terrestrial beings were sent to Earth by intergalactic ruler Xenu, who then destroyed the aliens by stacking them around volcanoes and blowing them up with hydrogen bombs.

The aliens' souls attached themselves to chosen humans, known as thetans, who will be one day be saved.

Pete, 29, first dated Nadine back in 2005 and the pair reportedly enjoyed a fling last summer, just weeks after the rocker split from supermodel Kate Moss. They rekindled their romance earlier this month.

Kate reportedly banned Pete from seeing Nadine during their relationship because she was not happy about their close friendship.
