Aleged identity thieves pretended to be the deceased Cobain to buy a $3 million New Jersey mansion and may have looted his estate to the tune of $72 million, the Sun of London reported Saturday.
Courtney Love reportedly told officials about the fraud last week and claims the crooks opened over 180 credit cards in Cobain's name.
"It was fraud after fraud," Love, 43, told the paper. "But nobody believed me until now."
The report states that Love knows who did this. She stumbled onto the scam five years ago, but was too intoxicated by drugs to stop it, she told the paper.
"I know who they are," she declared. "It had been going on since when I went cuckoo, bananas, in 2003."
The report claims Love spoke to Los Angeles detectives about the crimes.
Cobain committed suicide back in 1994 at age 27 leaving Love with their daughter Frances Bean in control of his estate.
Reportedly the estate makes millions annually and is funneled into a trust fund for Cobain and Frances Bean, 15.
Even though Love has been in and out of drug induced fogs, she mused to the Sun that she would know if Cobain was buying a house.
"He should probably get [himself] back home if that is the case," the ex-Hole lead singer said.
"Taking a child's money and future is a really horrible thing," Love said.
