It can strike anyone, and primarily affects boys over girls in a 1 to 4/5 ratio.
It also hit actress Jenny McCarthy who has called on the medical community to acknowledge that diet and vitamins may ease the symptoms of autism.
McCarthy's son Evan has autism, who received a diagnosis with associated language, social, and play delays in 2005.
Her most recent book, also a The New York Times bestseller, is titled "Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism," had Jenny out on the chat show circuit sharing her story on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Larry King Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show and others.
MCCarthy is also romantically linked to actor Jim Carrey, who supports her activist fight for the cure for autism.
McCarthy told Oprah and Larry King that diet supplements work: "I've been speaking to moms across the country who are all shouting out the same thing: 'This (diet and supplement intake) is working.'"
"It's so heartbreaking to see the medical community not support something called diet and vitamins. And it pains us, city after city after city. I see this heartbreak on these mom's faces."
"Autism isn't covered by (medical) insurance. If things like diets and supplements are working, then why not support it? These kids are getting better and I will not shut up and will not stop fighting about it."
Jenny will be speaking at The Holistic World Expo on March 14th - 16th, 2008 in Toronto, Ontario.
McCarthy will be speaking at 1 pm at the John Bassett Theatre on March 15th, 2008 for the first time in Toronto, Canada about: A Mother's Intuition - How to Overcome Any Obstacle - Recovering Autism.
