Morgan Freeman used to feel like a "prostitute".

The actor "only worked for the money" during the 70s - when he starred in educational kids TV show 'The Electric Company' - and became so low he was driven to drink.

Freeman said: "When I was in 'The Electric Company' I felt like a prostitute. I was working not because I enjoyed the work but because I needed the money.

"I realized I had reached a turning point one day when I woke up face down in a doorway, unable to remember how I got there. I recognised that I had a problem so I just quit drinking.

"I do have self-control. Once I realise that I've got to change something I just do it."

Freeman insists the "joy" he gains from making movies is now his sole motivation.

He said: "I don't have to work. I could stop and never have to worry about paying the rent again. I'm working for the joy of doing it."

Freeman can currently be seen in 'The Bucket List' in which he and Jack Nicholson star as two terminally ill patients who escape from a cancer ward to fulfil their remaining life ambitions.
