Janet Jackson wouldn't have been a success without her parents' tough love.

The 41-year-old singer, whose new album 'Discipline' is released later this month, says her strict upbringing as a devout Jehovah Witness installed a good work ethic in her.

She said: "Being a Jehovah's Witness, you grow up in a very religious world.

"I'd get up on Sunday mornings, go to the Kingdom Hall, go again on Thursday night and go to book study on Tuesdays, because that was my mother Katherine's routine."

Janet also revealed she dreamed of becoming a jockey, but was influenced to pursue a music career by her father Joe.

She said: "I really wanted to be a jockey. I loved being on top of this huge, powerful animal. I thought I could see the edge of the universe.

"But when I was nine, my father said, 'You should sing.' I told him I didn't want to. He said, 'You're going to sing.' So that's what I did."

Like a lot of organizations the Watchtower Jehovah's Witnesses have different standards for the way they treat regular members and for the way they VIP Celebrities.

Jehovah's Witnesses once fighters for free speech are now totalitarian because they try to cut you off from others who do not have the same beliefs, including family.

They will extol and preach 'God's Kingdom' and this sounds attractive, what they hide from you is their Watchtower sect version that Jesus has already had his second coming in 1914 and is working 'invisibly' through them.
They have won 37 of their 46 U.S. Supreme Court cases, assuring us all of freedom of speech and assembly and equal protection under the law.

The sad irony is that the Watchtower Society *daily* abuses the human rights of thousands of its members. It denies current members the right of free speech by forbidding them to speak to former members, even close family members.

And it denies former members their right of freedom of worship by refusing to allow them to leave the religion with dignity, should they come to disagree with Watchtower's practices or doctrines.
The 'religion' of Jehovah's Witnesses controls every aspect of its members' lives.

The Watchtower is a truly Orwellian world now

Jehovah's Witnesses and Scientology have helped a lot of celebrities

Unless you absolutely know what it's like to be on the 'inside' be careful there Tom. First off celebrities are treated very very differently. Secondly, as a woman she would not privy to any of the secret meetings held only by men in special positions...elders etc. Like scientologists, Jehovah's witnesses have a special ranking system for their members. That helps to instill the 'special' unity and the sense of belonging that members feel. Those who are very obedient and do as their told and never ever question the organization get appointed to special positions of power with secret access to things that the average rank and file witness are not allowed to know. They get these labels that make them feel important and special. Even as a male witness Michael Jackson would not have been privy to any special rankings as star status can be seen as a hindrance to thier ability to devote time to door to door work. It is a secret world with very bizarre rules and dangerous teachings that can kill. As an x witness my advice to you is don't be fooled by the popular media propaganda. Like all the other cults, you only get to see and hear the parts they expose you to. Once you join up, you better be ready to sell your self body and mind. Disown your family and friends and become one of the slaves. It's like the Truman show for dummies.

What has happened to Janet is not a Jehovah Witness thing. Millions of Catholics have had the same experience. To make it a Jehovah Witness thing exposes one as having an axe to grind against the church.

Hmmm,Jehovah's Witnesses will make you well just like Scientology.

If it worked for Janet what do you care? If it didn't work for you, leave. No one has a gun to their heads to be a member of any religion. Catholics often remain Catholics as they don't want to be ex-communicated and for family reasons but those are CHOICES what this country is founded on....

No Jehovah SpammersFeb 9th, 2008 - 13:40:02

It didn't 'work' for Janet she is not a Jehovah's Witness and the cult sure ruined her freak brother Michael.
When Janet posed nude for a centerfold some years back she said that she did it as a 'act of defiance' against the JW indoctrination.

I know you know what is best for Janet better than Janet but...

'The 41-year-old singer ...says her strict upbringing as a devout Jehovah Witness installed a good work ethic in her.'

Because you don't like the church and because you think others shouldn't like the church means nothing.

Her words about her life are good enough for me.

Rather than spread seeds of hate against a church, why not choose your church (or not) and leave others alone?

We all pray for you Danny and we know the many 'health' challenges you face but....please allow this to be about Janet and not about how the Jehovah Witness church did you wrong (boo-hoo).

This thread is for Janet Jackson comments. Not your 'stalking flamebaiting' or whatever you're going to acuse us of next. :-)

If it weren't so very very very pitiful, it'd be funny.

It's curious how these cults will use 'detached' celebrities to puff piece promote them

Hi Joy,

You wrote: 'It's curious how these cults will use 'detached' celebrities to puff piece promote them'

Are you suggesting that the Jehovah Witness church placed this article for their own purposes?

If not, what are you suggesting?

Janet is her own person...not a puppet of anyone.

Wow, the Watchtower must be desperate for any kind of even slightly positive publicity if their followers are praising an ex Witness who has posed nude for the centerfold of a magazine for making a comment about how her Witness upbringing helped her.

I congratulate Janet on her success, but I feel that she achieved it despite her Witness upbringing rather than because of it.

Know the TruthApr 3rd, 2008 - 20:50:40

I am currently trying to be in a relationship with a Jehovah's Witness man, and this is the hardest thing I have ever tried to do in my life. He is torn between how he really feels deep down inside, and what he has been taught growing up by his Witness parents.

These people are not normal, and they have a very hard time dealing with and functioning in day to day life outside of their 'organization'. These people are abused more frequently than not in their homes, and are taught that it is an expression of God's (Oops!), Jehaovah's love. I haven't met a Witness yet who even knows what genuine 'Godly' love is. All they know is superficial love and 'role play'.

Janet Jackson has had a successful career, no doubt about that. But we all know that her entire family is far from normal. So, if success is an even swap for true love and happiness, then maybe her life was perfect.

If she was not baptized then she is not consider a JW. I should know I was brought up in the same organization too but was never baptized. So, I am not a JW. Some family members are though because they were baptized. Some family members are disfellowship also.
