Britney Spears has reportedly agreed to outpatient treatment for her bipolar disorder.

The troubled singer - who recently lost all visitation rights to her two young sons following her erratic behaviour - is said to be "receptive" to the idea of allowing professionals to "evaluate and treat" her condition.

For months, Commissioner Scott Gordon - the judge in charge of her custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline over two-year-old Sean Preston and 16-month-old Jayden James - has repeatedly ordered her to undergo psychological tests, but she has so far refused.

When, and if, she agrees, the treatment process will start immediately, according to gossip website tmz.com.

Sufferers of bipolar disorder, a form of manic depression, experience extreme highs and lows and can quickly switch from one emotion to the next.

Last year, Britney's friends insisted she was suffering from a mental illness after many people assumed her odd actions were down to substance abuse.

Pals said the 'Gimme More' singer had many psychological issues, including bipolar and postpartum depression - the medical term for postnatal depression.

One friend said: "It's not substance abuse - it's mental!

"Postpartum has always been a problem after giving birth to Sean and Jayden."
