Johnny Depp and Reese Witherspoon were winners at the People's Choice Awards last night (08.01.08).

'Pirates of the Caribbean' star Johnny was voted Favourite Male Movie Star, while 'Rendition' actress Reese scooped the female equivalent at the 34th annual ceremony in Los Angeles.

However, due to the Hollywood writers' strike, now in its ninth week, the ceremony changed from being broadcast live from Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium to a "news magazine style" broadcast.

Most winners pre-recorded their acceptance speeches, and many voiced their support for the writers' battle with the studios.

'Legally Blonde' actress Reese said: "We are nothing without our writers. But we are also nothing without our audience."

Joaquin Phoenix, who won the Favourite Leading Man accolade, added: "I'm speechless without the writers. Seriously. But in my own quiet way, I want to thank the millions of fans that voted for me for favourite leading man."

Other winners at the ceremony included Drew Barrymore, who was awarded the Favourite Leading Lady gong for her role alongside Hugh Grant in 'Music and Lyrics', and 'Knocked Up' actress Katherine Heigl who was crowned Favourite TV Female Star for her portrayal of Dr. Isobel Stevens in hit US TV show 'Grey's Anatomy'.

The ceremony isn't the only glitzy awards show to be affected by the strike. Earlier this week, it was announced the Golden Globes ceremony has been cancelled.
