Angelina Jolie will play a real-life spy in a new action thriller.
The 32-year-old actress is set to portray intelligence operative Kathi Lynn Austin, who worked for the UN Security Council to bring down various arms trafficking and terrorist gangs in Africa, Europe, Southeast Asia and Central America.
The film will focus on a character inspired by Victor Bout, a real-life former Russian spy turned major player in the trafficking of illegal munitions, who garnered the nickname the 'Merchant of Death'.
Paramount Studios, who acquired the rights to Austin's story, are hoping to create a franchise "similar in spirit" to the 'Bourne' trilogy starring Matt Damon.
Jolie - who is currently filming the Clint Eastwood drama 'The Changeling' - is no stranger to action films.
She starred as a sexy married assassin alongside Brad Pitt in 2005 film 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith', and played daredevil archaeologist Lara Croft in the computer game-inspired 'Tomb Raider' franchise.
