Benicio Del Toro attended a meeting for drug addicts at the Gay Men's Health Crisis Centre in New York on Friday (02.11.07).
The actor was there to support a friend hooked on methamphetamine, who he met while researching his latest film role 'Things We Lost in the Fire'.
A source told the New York Post newspaper: "Benicio stood up and said, 'Hi, my name is Benicio. I am not an addict, and I am not gay. I am here to support my friend.'
"He is a sponsor to a guy he met doing research for his druggie role in 'Things We Lost in the Fire' and they kept in touch.
"Benicio is now his sponsor. But it's weird because usually sponsors are people who have been through the 12 steps and can coach you through them, not some guy who's just famous. But I guess it's sweet."
A representative for Benicio refused to comment on reports the 'Traffic' star attended the meeting.
