Nicole Kidman's new movie has upset Christian groups who fear it will promote atheism to children.

Kidman stars in 'The Golden Compass', an adaptation of outspoken atheist Philip Pullman's first novel in the 'His Dark Materials' trilogy which many critics believe tells the story of a girl on a quest to kill God.

Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, said: "These books denigrate Christianity, thrash the Catholic Church and sell the virtues of atheism.

"They're intentionally watering down the most offensive element. I'm not really concerned about the movie, which looks fairly innocuous. The movie is made from the books.

"It's a deceitful, stealth campaign. Pullman is hoping his books will fly off the shelves at Christmas time."

New Line Cinema, who produce the movie, have made an effort to keep the religious themes to a minimum in the film, but Christian groups fear children who enjoy the film will read the books.

A New Line spokesman said: "'The Golden Compass' is an entertaining fantasy about love, courage, responsibility and freedom. We look forward to the December 7 opening."

Pullman said: "This must be the only film attacked in the same week for being too religious and for being anti-religious - and by people who haven't seen it.

"I have very friendly and happy relations with the filmmakers, and I'm very happy with what they are doing."

CHILD OF THE LIVING GODOct 30th, 2007 - 14:43:47

I think that it is disturbing and synical for this gentleman to make a movie about killing God even if it is perception. I believe it is all about the author/creator intent when the project began. I will keep him in my prayers and even as Saul became Paul on Damacus road, I believe that this man who is now an atheist will someday be a true believer in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God. Prayfully, New Line Cinema won't be boycotted for this movie being on their label. There is good and evil in this world, I am thankful for the choice and I choose not to see this movie.

I did go to the 'Golden Compass' website and it was quite disturbing. I was trying to figure out the word 'DAEMON'. 'DAEMON' is another word for the devil, lucifer. Okay, now we have a problem. And if you look at the website, it is truly personifying demonic spirits. People, please open your spiritual eyes and see the malicious intent this movie.

I read the bookOct 30th, 2007 - 15:51:36

I did read this book (all three) a while back ago. They are my teenage daughters, given to her as a present. She really liked them and asked me to read them. At first I thought they were great, very good story line then something starts to change. I told my husband (we are Christians) I didn't feel right about the direction the story was taking.. And yes, by the end of the book they do succeed in killing God. God is painted out to be a egotistical, mean controlling angle. And there is no heaven, just a prison type place that he uses people as slaves. It is very disturbing actually, what hope would there be if that was our god?? How sad for our children to have to wonder about things like that. This author must have had something bad happen in his live to be so angry at god. I'll pray for him :) I also read ALL of c.S lewis books and still love to think back on those stories. My suggestion is read books Before your kids do. I couldn't believe this was written for kids..

Nicole Kidman stated recently that she is NOT a practicing Catholic. It was either in the recent Vanity Fair story or the story in Interview magazine. So I frankly find her comments about not doing this movie if it were anti-Catholic rather hypocritical. She says the movie has been watered down, but she doesn't seem to care what the books are like. I wonder if she's even read them.

Spiritual Warfare VeteranOct 31st, 2007 - 17:22:44

The Moulin Rouge actress in question is Nicole Kidman. I understand creative license and all, but this 'Daemon' concept in the movie is spiritually lethal - it introduces our children to the demonic world. Spelling that word differently doesn't take away the real meaning. They are talking about demons.

I see how secular parents would not see a problem with it at all - they don't know any better. But Christian parents need to take a closer look at this. Let's call out this movie's 'Daemon' concept for what it is - an attempt to get your child to accept 'having a companion that is invisible in our world' that is inseparable from them.

This is the job of imps, which are lesser demons assigned to children and used by Satan to familiarize them with spiritual forces. Their job is to mentally cripple a child before they can grow up and discover God's purpose for them. Imps/demons do this by gaining the child's trust through becoming the child's innocent companion (sound oddly familiar?). The relationship transforms quickly and before the child knows it, the imp becomes their biggest bully/intimidator. If the imp/demon is successful, the child will never achieve God's purpose for them because of low self-esteem, which directly negatively affects their ablility to defend themselves in spiritual warfare - they've already been spiritually defeated.

I'm going to stop now because I know this is too deep - even for many Christians. Here's my point: Parents, please pray over your kids, and talk to them about this concept if you plan to let them view this movie. Listen intently for these warning signs if they confide in you about a 'bad dream'. It could be more serious than that. Dreams are sometimes the demons' medium of choice.

I am really disturbed at this movie comming out ' The Golden Compass' and at first I thought it would be a good movie when my Aunt sent me an email about the movie and the books. I being 15 years old was awestruck and was reminded of the prophecy of Armagedon and the Anti-Christ and that one way of the Anti-Christ comming to fame was by capturing the attention of people in such ways like this. And little children can be led into anything and you can contol what they think, 'example Hitler' This man Pullman may be this Anti-Christ that we have heard off. And if you read enough articles about him you get an erie feeling. I think that a book claiming that religion and God is bad is surely the work of Satan, and claiming to KILL A GOD! This is outrageous!! How could a company publish or produce (In a country created under God 'USA') a story giving such a message! I am 15 years old and if I know it's stupid than it most likly IS! If you look at our world today you know these are the last days! And I propose that WE CHRISTIANS unite against this, boycott it, and do all we can to prevent this from poisoning the minds of our children!

Tell me what good comes from Aeitheism? What is it's foundation? ?What is it's goal to obtain besides make us enter into the wide gates of hell? Instead of reading or watching these books, read the Bible to save us and our future!

I think that Christians are imps (re: imps. read comment above). You scare and bully children into a belief system by using the fear of hell. Who invented imps? Is that in the Bible? There is no reason for anyone to believe in hell since it isn't described literally in the Bible. the Bible is made to be read figuratively, not literally. There are like 4 different descriptions of hell. If you want, hell be a representation of a terrible world because of ignorant people who do each other harm because they have have not been given a good enough reason not to. Get out of your made up realms. God doesn't talk to you, that's you talking to yourself, making yourself think God is talking to you, hence belief. We're beyond belif now. Things are better known, there is a new standard. To paraphrase Galileo, 'the Bible tells you how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go.' The bible is figurative and has failed as a guidance system for humans because it is too distant from ourselves.

After watching this movie I promptly abandoned all my beliefs and immediately went back home to worship Satan. I killed a puppy and drank his blood. I grew horns in my forehead. Will the attacks on our faith ever cease?

For we all one day will have to answer to a higher power. Whom do you think breaths life into you. Do you think you woke yourself up this morning. The devil comes to kill, steal and destory. But God comes so you can have eternal life. People are so blinded. Everything that is happening now is in the bible. People are allowing the demonic spirits to just take over. God is a God of unconditional love. He loves us so much that he gives us a choice. He also sent his son Jesus. Jesus died on the cross and rose on the 3rd day for all of us. Now you can either serve him or you can deny him. But the day of judgment will come. How can you deny the one whom created you. If your life is full of turmoil, that has nothing to do with God. God gives life he said he will never leave you nor forsake you. But have to receive him into your heart. I pray that God has mercy on these people. For if only they knew. Taste is see that the Lord is good.

God Bless

Kitty, I totally disagree with you on the part that it is far beyond us and is a bad guidance system for humans. If you happen to know that the bible was written an unbelieve amount of time ago and was meant for humans at that time and the many generations afterwards, but since it was written in that time stage, it was written in a way that they speak, but if you study it closely it still gives the same message. I'm not trying to fight people's beliefs here but I just happened to see that comment and thought I should say something about it.

But about the book, I will never watch this movie, nor will I allow my kids in the future to watch it. I really think that Pullman has gone way to far with this in the 'killing of God.' I know it's his belief and he has that right, but it truley is horrible and when I heard about it, it took my breath away after watching the amazing previews.
