The 'Stardust' star has revealed that at the start of her career she wanted to wear skimpy outfits and bare all, but was persuaded by Narciso to dress like a lady.
Claire, 28, said: "I was 17 and I had just finished 'Romeo and Juliet'. My publicist at the time was pretty clever, and she introduced me to Narciso when I was about to present an award at the Oscars.
"At 17, girls are so confused about sex. Maybe they've just started to have it, and they think full exposure is what they're supposed to aim for, and, of course, it's not.
"So I wanted to be sexy for the Oscars! And Narciso said, 'No, you're a girl. You should look age-appropriate.' It seems pretty fundamental, but it was important for me to hear that at the time."
The 'My So-Called Life' actress has become something of a style icon since, but confessed she made a fool of herself at her first ever catwalk show.
She added to the New York Times newspaper: "Oddly, my first fashion show was Cynthia Rowley, and I was in it. She asked me to be in it. I was 16, and about to shoot 'Romeo and Juliet'.
"The show was organised so that there were two models on the runway at once, and being the silly girl that I was, I waved at the model coming toward me. Very quickly I figured out that was not what was expected of me. So in the next outfit I behaved like a model, looking suitably bored and irritated."
