Kate Middleton, the girlfriend of Britain's Prince William, is anxiously preparing for her first official meeting with Queen Elizabeth.

Kate, 25, is keen to make a good impression on William's grandmother when they spend the weekend together at the queen's Scottish residence, Balmoral Castle, next month.

A source told America's Us Weekly magazine: "She needs to pack a crazy amount of clothes, an outfit for lunch, one for dinner, clothes for the evening, casual wear for the day.

"And there are so many rules to remember, like curtseying whenever she sees the queen - even if she has already seen her that day."

The fashion buyer - who works for British clothing company Jigsaw - is said to be terrified about the trip, as the queen will be scrutinising her as a suitable wife for the prince.

An insider said: "Kate's freaking out. Meeting with the queen means one thing, a talk about possibly becoming William's wife."

Kate - who got back together with William in July after a three-month break - has met the queen on several occasions, but sources say this get-together could be a little awkward.

Royal aides claim the queen encouraged William to split from Kate when the couple's four-year romance hit the rocks in April, as she was worried her grandson was not ready to settle down.

William is now desperate to show the queen he is serious about Kate, after realising she was the girl for him during their recent romantic holiday in the Seychelles.
