London - Irish rock star Bono, whose group U2 has written a song about Myanmar pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, has appealed for 'prayers for the Burmese people' and said he 'slept uneasily' after watching pictures of the violent crackdown of the peaceful protest.
'It is extraordinary to see the Buddhist monks isn't it? Their non-violence may, I pray, win out over the ugliness of the situation,' he said.
'There is jeopardy. I slept uneasily last night and I'm sure everyone else that watched did too.' The singer, speaking in London, said he had met and corresponded with Suu Kyi.
'I have a little bit of a relationship with Aung San Suu Kyi. I've met her family and corresponded with her. U2 actually wrote a song - Walk On - for her.'
'I've always followed her progress and that of the Burmese people. She is a study in grace and they are a study in patience.'
Bono said everyone should offer their support to the Burmese people.
In London, about 50 people took part in a demonstration outside the Embassy of Myanmar Thursday, organized by human rights group Amnesty International.
Speakers condemned the crackdown and denounced the reluctance of China to put pressure on the ruling junta in Myanmar.
