During his acceptance speech, he paid tribute to his late adoptive grandmother who raised him.
He said: "My grandmother has got to be spreading her wings and flying around in heaven, just so happy.
"This is one of the most amazing days of my life."
The 39-year-old star - real name Eric Morlon Bishop - was recognised for his Academy Award-winning portray of soul musician Ray Charles in 'Ray', as well as his Oscar-nominated role in 'Collateral'.
Foxx - who can next be seen starring alongside Jennifer Garner in new thriller 'The Kingdom' - began his career as a stand-up comic, before landing his own comedy series, 'The Jamie Foxx Show'.
His big Hollywood break came in 1999, when he was cast in Oliver Stone's American football movie 'Any Given Sunday'. He has also appeared in 'Dreamgirls' and 'Ali'.
Foxx is also a Grammy-nominated singer whose album, 'Unpredictable', topped America’s Billboard chart.
