The 24-year-old actress - who separated from the 'Lord of the Rings' actor last year - says filming 'The Girl in the Park' helped her recover from her heartache.
Kate, who plays Sigourney Weaver's long-lost daughter in the movie, said: "Last year was difficult on many levels, and this film was very therapeutic for me. I was able to have a cathartic experience through this character. I was grieving quite a few things.
"If you could have been inside my head, it was a very interesting experience, and it happened to show physically as well. Look now, a year later, I feel more healed, but it was a difficult year."
The 'Superman Returns' star - who dated Orlando on and off for four years - also admits she puts on a brave face to shield any inner turmoil she may be suffering from the world.
She told USA Today: "You don't really see my character's pain until the very end of the film. I do that in my life, too. I try to just put on a certain face and try to get through things the best I can, until there's a breaking point and things unravel."
