Pete Doherty says a hamster inspired him to start writing songs.
The Babyshambles frontman penned 'Billy the Hamster' when he was just 12, after his parents refused to buy him a pet rodent.
He told Q magazine: "The first song I ever wrote was called 'Billy The Hamster'. I had been promised a hamster, so I went and bought the cage and the sawdust and all the things, hoping that they'd get the hint and buy me a hamster. By the time they did, I was a bit old. Its name was Reindeer though, not Billy."
Pete admits he was terrible at playing the guitar until he met former Libertines bandmate Carl Barat.
He said: "I picked up the guitar quite late, about 16 or 17. I just hammered away at it for two or three years, not really getting anywhere. Then I bumped into Carl, just sat at his feet, gobsmacked, just taking it in and drawing on that, really."
The Libertines enjoyed success with their two critically-acclaimed albums 'Up the Bracket' and 'The Libertines', but split in 2004.
Pete now fronts his new band Babyshambles, while Carl founded the Dirty Pretty Things.
The second Babyshambles album, 'Shotter's Nation', is due for release next month.
