Naomi Campbell says the murder of her friend Gianni Versace sent her spiralling into drink and drug addiction.
The supermodel claims the shooting of the renowned fashion designer outside his Florida mansion in 1997 caused her to "self destruct".
Naomi said: "The way he was killed really traumatised me. I partied whenever I wanted to, burning the candle at both ends. It put me spiritually and emotionally on my knees and triggered my self destruct button."
The 37-year-old's drug problems first came to light when she was pictured leaving a Narcotics Anonymous meeting in 2001.
Naomi admits she still suffers from drink "relapses", and finds it difficult to control her temper.
Referring to an incident when she hurled a mobile phone at former maid Ana Scolavino, she said: "I've got a temper like any person."
Naomi added the five days community service she was forced to undergo earlier this year as a result of the attack made her "grow up".
Another former maid, Gaby Gibson, is currently in the process of suing Naomi for allegedly kicking or hitting her in the back of the head when she couldn't find a pair of the model's favourite jeans.

So easy to blame everything else on drug and mental problems and not face the facts.
