Founded by Kristal back in 1973, it became legendary as a forum for American punk and punk-influenced bands like Ramones, Television, Mink Deville, The Dead Boys, The Dictators, The Fleshtones, Blondie, and Talking Heads.
The club closed on the weekend of October 13, 2006.
Kristal died of complications of lung cancer, according to a statement from his daughter, Lisa Kristal Burgman.
The world-renowned club, known for having the city's best sound system and unpleasant restrooms, closed when Kristal's landlord refused to renew his lease.
CBGB's doors opened in December 1973 on the Bowery in the East Village. He gave the stage to unknowns at the time, such as the Ramones, Television, Blondie and Talking Heads.
